UFO ... Out of the window on your right

… is an unidentified flying object. If you thought sightings

"There's no doubt in my mind that
we had an encounter with a UFO
and I've got the picture to prove it," says pilot David Hastings
Flying saucers, mysterious multi-coloured cylindrical shapes, are once again streaking across our skies. After a dearth over the last few years, sights of Unidentified Flying Objects are significantly rising. Early in November 2002 a pilot from Xiamen Airlines flying near the south eastern Chinese city of Nanjing reported the presence of a hovering light blue object — a sighting also confirmed by aircraft from Xiamen Airlines flying some 120 kilometres away whose crew spotted a white and blue skateboard craft looming over the eastern Bengbu City in the province of Anhui.

China has experienced a surge of sitings which, since 11 September 2001 have inevitably caused a surge of alarm across all continents, not least in the United States where pilots and jets at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington DC, remain on 24 hour alert — their task to respond to suspicious or unusual incidents as part of an air defence protection system. At two in the morning of 26 July 2002, residents near the base were awakened by the roar of Air Force jets. Calls were made to the local radio station by people claiming to have seen a fast moving
bright blue or orange ball. One witness, Renny Roberts said: "The jets were right on its tail. It was eerily silent which was really scary." Failed attempts at Andrews to establish radio contact with the object had been followed swiftly by the launch of F-16s primed with their quickly launching air-to-air missiles. But all attempts to close in were frustrated when the blue ball was wiped from radar screens. Challenged later, Lt Col Steve Chase, of 113th Air Wing of the State's Air National Guard would only say: "It was a routine launch". And in September, attention switched to New York and Califon, New Jersey, where witnesses saw several white objects, including a stationary cylindrical shape. It was described as having an outer ring lit by rapidly pulsating and rotating lights. A smaller object was also observed flying erratically round it.

October brought a rash of highly dramatic and hitherto unexplained sightings, notably in Astrakan, at the mouth of the Volga river in Russia where, for five consecutive days, a spherical Ufo performed aerial manoeuvres, firing beams of red, blue and green light at the ground before vanishing. In addition, four teenagers driving on the highway near Kursk, some 500 kilometres south of Moscow, testified to a glowing star-like object which circled above them, causing their car radio to cut out and be replaced by bursts of static. Eventually the object went on its way, flying south. As it passed out of view, the radio returned to normal. On this and other sightings, defence authorities have always maintained firm silence — a practice which dates from the dawn of the Cold War. In a new book*, two British Ufo researchers, David Clark and Andy Roberts
reveal the existence of a small, secret team which in the late 1940s investigated flying saucer activity, operating in London from the Ministry of Defence's heavily guarded, top secret Room 801, which officially does not exist. Set up in 1947, Room 801 was a decade later handling 10,000 reported sightings, including the account of a pilot at the controls of an RAF Venom in 1957 who had been ordered by Britain's Royal Air Force to intercept a Ufo over two strategic bomber bases in the East Anglia district.

Guided by radar to within half a mile of the Ufo, the Venom closed in but all at once the pilot was heard asking: "Where did he go?" In an astounding move, the Ufo had manoeuvred behind his tail, seemingly impossible to shake off. Eventually, the Venom, running short of fuel, was forced to return unmolested to base. Just what this Ufo was and where it came from remains a mystery. Of the findings of Room 801, David Clark says: "The Ministry of Defence told us blandly that all such records have long been destroyed".
The story of a flying saucer in the
California desert and talking to a
man from Venus is told by George
Adamski. The small scout ship came
to Earth on 20 November 1952 from a
gigantic cigar shaped mother ship

And pilot David Hastings from Salhouse near Norwich, Norfolk has revealed how he had a close encounter with a Ufo when flying in the USA in 1987. The encounter was witnessed by his co-pilot David Paterson as the pair flew along in their Cessana C-337 Sky Master over the Mojavi Desert. David described how a mystery black shape came at them head-on, then flashed overhead. Seconds later they became aware of a object moving a high speed at their side. "There's no doubt in my mind that we had an encounter with a Ufo," he says, "and I've got the picture to prove it." When David who has been flying for 40 years, later showed the snaps to US Navy officers they refused to comment. Avid researchers can find accounts of Ufos, some reportedly crewed by extra terrestrials, going back centuries.

Among the archives of Ampleforth Abbey in the county of Yorkshire, Benedictine monks hold the fragment of an 13th century manuscript which reads: "Took the sheep from Wilfred and roasted them on the feast of SS Simon and Jude. But when Henry the Abbot was about to say Grace, John, one of the brethren came in and said there was a great portent outside. Then they all ran out and lo! a large round silver thing like a disk flew slowly over them and excited the greatest terror …" But it was the 19th century which finally brought closely documented sightings of Ufos whose descriptions match those in our own time. In April 1897 something very like an airship was spotted over Kansas City, years before any such craft existed. It was said to have green tail lights and to be cigar-shaped, with enormous projections. In Sisterville, Virginia, it was described by sightseers as "a huge conical ship, 180 feet long, with fins on either

One of the photographs which David
Hastings believes proves the existence of Ufos
side". As to how Ufos and their crews are powered, theorists have put forward a case for levitation — the ability of individuals to raise themselves and objects from the ground to float on air. They cite the case of the 16th century St Joseph of Copertino who once, taking pity on ten workmen who found it impossible to move a heavy cross, leapt astride it and coolly flew it to its destination. Theorists also cite the building of the Great Pyramids, whose stones weight 70 tonnes each, as the work of levitation, since there was no machinery then. The stones would
have been simply slipped through the air, it has been argued that this is the way Ufos are manoeuvred today and how extra terrestrial crews can visit us so easily. As to the presence of extra terrestrials, a recent number of the magazine, Flying Saucer Review, carries a report from the quiet residential community of Maguayo in Puerto Rico where flying saucers and "strange lights" have been seen over the nearby lake, together with their crews, described as "fair men of human appearance." Alberto Camacho and his wife Marisol were awakened one night by strange voices talking unintelligibly. From their balcony, the couple saw three strange "little men" with light grey skins and pear-shaped heads, examining and taking branches from an ornamental, anti-cancerous plant. Neighbouring householders attested to similar sightings.

Puerto Rican Ufologist Jorge Martin, writing in Flying Saucer Review, hazards that "extra terrestrial species are using the Earth as an enormous cosmic nursery from which they are obtaining innumerable types of botanical and biological genetic materials. We ourselves go to the forests in search of plants to aid us in the battle against certain illnesses. Why can't they?"
But no recent sightings of extra terrestrials have ever equalled the bizarre experience half a century ago of amateur astronomer George Adamski who made the astonishing claim: "It was about 12.30 in the noon hour on Thursday, 20th November 1952, that I first made personal contact with a man from another world. He came to Earth in his space craft, a flying saucer. He called it a Scout Ship. This took place on the California desert 10.2 miles from Desert Center towards Parker, Arizona."

Adamski and several friends had seen a large cigar-shaped mother ship, from which had emerged a bell-shaped Ufo. It had then vanished behind some sand dunes. Adamski told his friends to wait and, reaching the spot where the Ufo had landed, he saw the figure of a man. He was of average height, with golden tanned complexion, bluish grey eyes and long blond hair and by signs indicated to Adamski that he came from Venus. Adamski later claimed that he had many other encounters with the young Venusian, including some in which he had travelled to the moon and other planets, taking many photographs of luminous bell-shaped Ufos and cigar-shaped mother ships. The reliability of Adamski's photographs of the Venusian, and other beings divides Ufologists to this day, many of whom believe firmly that they are genuine.

Sceptics point out that ever alert radar and satellite early warning systems have produced no hard evidence of the existence of Ufos, manned or unmanned. In Britain the Ministry of Defence has denied flatly that the country's air space has ever been compromised by "unauthorised air activity". But, by way of contrast, in one of its latest statements on Ufos the MoD was uncharacteristically cautious: "The Ministry does not question the existence, or otherwise, of extra terrestrial life forms, about which it remains open minded. To date we are, however, unaware of any evidence which proves that these phenomena exist." The Ministry has also revealed that in the year 2000, the latest for which figures are available, it had 210 reported "unexplained aerial sightings" on its books. Are other worlds watching us?
