Finnair Narrowbody Decision In 2003

Thu Dec 05, 2002 3:29 am

Finnair decides in the first half of 2003 about their 100 seater need.
Under consideration are the EMB-170/190, the A318 and also the 717 is still in the run. Interesting to see who wins. The 318 gives comonality, with the Embraers you have a good mix of seat capacitiy and the 717 is perfect for Finnairs needs (Small Airports, hard winters...) as the DC-9 showed to them.. Its hard to decide...what do you think?

I can't see the A318 win this one since they do not like to use the A32X on domestic flights. I think it was because of their weight but I'm not totally sure about this.
Since they really liked the DC-9 I could assume that they would like to stick to it in the future too and get the 717.

EMB-175 and 195... The fleet requirement is for 70- and 100-seaters, not only 100-seaters.

717fan,

How is B717 better than EMB-170/190 ot A318 at small airports and hard winters? IIRC Finnair communicated some time ago they were evaluating the Embraers, but they didn't mention A&B.

Well if it's for a 70 to 100 seater than I also take the move to the EMB 170/190.

Joni, that is what Finnair said to me this week....
and...I didn't say that the 717 is better...I said its the perfect aircraft for such operations. It depends on what Boeing is doing...I believe if they offer a 717-100 they have very good chances to win this one....but I have to say that I also believe that Embraers has the lead.

Hey

What don't they consider the CRJ? Air Canada Jazz has been operating them succesfully with similar hard winter conditions.

717? No chance!
They'll go Embraer before they introduce an orphan aircraft.

But my money is that Airbus will pull it off...likely with operating cost quarantees to cover the 70-90 seat arena...

Either way Airbus will win since I believe they have a stake in Embraer (?).

FlightInternational of this week reports on the same...adding that also extending leases on the MD-80's and leasing some second hand F-100 is an option.....
Interestingly they only speak of the A-318, B-717 and the EMB-170, but not of the larger EMB-190/195....
