More Routes And 732s For Zip

Fri Dec 06, 2002 12:10 am

Zip, Air Canada's no-frills subsidiary, is adding three more 732s to its fleet and will be starting new routes to as far east as Montreal beginning Feb. 2.

These new routes will replace Air Canada mainline flights:

  • Winnipeg-Montreal
  • Winnipeg-Ottawa
  • Calgary-Abbotsford
  • Calgary-Victoria

Any word on which aircraft are making the transition to Zip colours?

Given that the new routes will replace Air Canada mainline, I don't think Zip is really taking too much business away from WestJet. One has to see if Zip's costs are significantly lower than mainline, to really warrant the new venture. Maybe the net effect is positive for Air Canada, but I wouldn't think it would be dramatically so. They are independent, according to Air Canada, so hopefully we'll get some financial information out of them shortly.
