Siberian ATC Go On Hunger Strike

Fri Dec 06, 2002 7:34 am

11 Siberian airports are having operations disrupted as ATC controllers go on hunger strike.

Thy ATC controllers are poorly paid and are demanding 15 000 Roubles / US$471.00 / €471.00 a year. 20 strikers have been declared unfit to work and three have been taken into hospital since the strike began last Friday.

Flights passing through the airports and from Europe to Asia have been limited and delayed. The most serious strike is probably in Novosibirsk's Tolmachevo airport, the main hub coordinating trans-Siberian flights. The strike is continuing as Russian law forbids strikes by ATCs.
