New Terminal At Boston/Delta

Hello All. Some fairly big news from Boston was announced this past week as Massport and Delta have agreed to a US$350 million terminal A project. The current Terminal A was built by Eastern and opened in the 1960s and has never been completely overhauled. Delta will move all of its operations to Terminal A from C, which is currently shares with United and TWA. Boston is the only airport in the world which has all of Delta's Services-Delta Connection (dba Comair, ASA, BEX), Delta Express, Delta Shuttle and mainline.
DL Connection, Shuttle and Express will be operated out of the refurbished existing structure, and mainline operations will be out of a satellite Terminal next to the existing structure alongside Harborside Drive, where Massport's headquarters are located.
Delta also announced plans to make Boston a major international hub by applying for service to London, Paris, Shannon, Rome, Frankfurt and possibly other locales. The airline apparently will operate B777 and 767-300's on these routes.

I had heard about the Terminal A replacement, but the international routes are exciting news to me. Hailing from London where no airline really has a route monopoly (of course there are exceptions), I have often thought that Boston was underserved internationally. Currently Lufthansa, ALITALIA, Aer Lingus and Icelandair have route monopolies to FRA, MXP, DUB, SHN and KEF, respectively, so they can charge slightly higher fares on these routes as they know someone is more willing to pay higher fares, than make a stop. Anyways, thanks for making my day.

Adding to what I said earlier, I was curious as to whether the new Terminal A will have customs? If these international flights all go as planned, and say they all come in the at same time you're talking over 1,000 people. I know that the exitsing customs in Terminal E is getting expanded, but 1,000 people in a short period of time, to add to the other 1,000 people from the current flights. Plus, these flights will make Delta the largest international carrier (in terms of flights per day) after Air Canada/Air Nova, which already operate out of E, so the benefits of having a TOTALLY consolidated operation is crucial. So my question is: Will the new Terminal A have it's own US Customs and Immigration and Naturalization offices, or will all flights continue to arrive at Terminal E and later be taxied over to the airlines terminal? I hope it's the former, then Boston will become a more world class airport, and less...JFK or Heathrow (where you often have to chage terminals to go from an international to a domestic flight).

Is Delta simply going to refurbish the existing Terminal A and also add on to it? Or is it going to demolish the existing structure and build a completely new structure. I had heard a few years back on a tour of Logan that Terminal A was slated for demolition. Do either of you know if they're building a whole new terminal or just refurbishing and adding to the existing building? Thanks

Delta's new Terminal A in Boston is a entirely new facility. It will consist of a terminal and concourse where the current Terminal A exists and a second concourse located along the perimiter of the airfield. The two concourses will be connected by an underground tunnel with moving sidewalks. The main concourse will house operations for Delta Shuttle, Delta Connection and Delta Express. The satellite concourse will accomodate mainline Delta as well as international and code-share partners. The facility will include complete Customs and Immigration facilities. The current Terminal A will be demolished.

This facility will allow Delta to grow it's presence in BOS and the northeast. Delta currently is largest carrier in BOS in terms of revenue generated. Expect growth to begin before the new terminal is completed in 2004.

Although I only work at Logan for Massport Aviaton Media Relations in the summer, my understanding is that Terminal A will not be demolished but radically overhauled. It has also been Massport's policy to not agree to the demolition of A because it would be too detrimental to airport operations. Currently A houses Continental with a fairly decent operations (hourly MD-80s to EWR, a decent amount of flights to CLE and IAh as well), Delta Shuttle/Comair's hourlies to LGA and DCA, Midwest Express' 6 daily's (MCI and MIL), Frontiers' two daily's to DEN and in the summer Spirit's flights to Myrtle Beach. Massport does not have the capabilities to locate these aircraft elsewhere. The terminal will have to remain operational until the very day that Delta is to move in, esp. since we have a lease with Continental on their gates. Therefore, it is not possible to demolish A and build another one from scratch. The existing structure has to stand, and Delta will build another satellite stucture. I will check on this if I stop by the office during Thanksgiving break.

Boston is one of the few major airports in America which isn't a hub for any airline. Once this new terminal is completed do you think it is safe to say Boston is a small hub for Delta?
