Aiports That Have Had 747 Service

Tue Dec 10, 2002 12:49 am

I'm interested in determining which airports have had scheduled passenger 747 flights either in the past or currently. Remember, PASSENGER service only and SCHEDULED service vs. charters or otherwise. For airports that aren't obvious 747 candidates listing the service offered and airline would also be interesting. I'm not a particulary well-traveled interational flier, so I'll start the list off from what I think I know of U.S. 747 operations:

Honolulu
Anchorage
San Diego SAN (British Airways)
Los Angeles LAX
San Francisco SFO
Portland PDX (United to NRT)
Seattle SEA
Phoenix PHX (America West to HNL and British Airways)
Denver DEN
Houston IAH
Dallas DFW
Dallas DAL (Braniff, plus there is a picture on a.net of a Delta 747 at Love)
Minneapolis MSP
St. Louis STL
Chicago ORD
Detroit DTW
Atlanta ATL
Orlando MCO
Fort Lauderdale FLL (South African and Air Canada)
Miami MIA
Washington IAD
Baltimore BWI (KLM)
Pittsburgh PIT (British Airways)
Philadelphia PHL
Newark EWR
New York JFK
Boston BOS

There are three additional airports that I suspect may have had 747 service but I'm not sure: OAK, CLT and CVG.

JohnJ,
you are correct with CVG, Air France and Sabena used to fly their B747s into CVG on code sharing flight with Delta.
Another airport that used to see B747 service was Savannah, GA when Delta flew their infamous heavies on a continuing flight from LAX through ATL.

Delta flew scheduled 747's from MSY to LAX and DFW back in the mid 70's when they operated that aircraft.

And I'm fairly certain that Pan Am flew in a 747 or two during the days of the DL/PA Interchange flight from MSY to London via ATL and IAD.

Of course, many 74's have visited New Orleans over the years, including: NW 747-200, UA 747-200/400, BA 747-400, Aer Lingus 747-100, KLM 747-400, Kalitta 747-200, LH 747-400, Iberia 747-200, Air Atlanta 747-200....just to name a few.

CLE - None anymore, but at first, United had a hub here with 747 flights as many as you can think of. Then they pulled out and the chartered 747's were the only ones left. Then the charter flights went under and the last 747 that was scheduled at CLE was in 1999, when the Browns chartered a NW 747 for one of their games.

India does!

I think that AMD and BLR get them. I know that AI 144/5 originates in AMD and ends in EWR

BLR has AI 111/2 or 0 i forget originates there and goes to JFK. MAA might get some but i don't know.

Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji gets 747's. Mumbai's 747's are

Air India
Northwest
British Airways
Lufthansa?

There is more but i cant think of any

Delhi's Indira Gandhi Int'l Airport also gets them w/ service from

Air India, BA, KLM, LH, some others too

Kolkata's Netaji(sp?) Subhas Chandra Bose Int'l Airport

KLM used to fly there w/ continuing service from DEL

For the ski season of either 1995 or 1996, I saw a Lufthansa either 741 or 742 parked at Colorado Springs on numerous occasions, a continuation of a flght from Chicago.

It was always on the board, but I don't know if it was always a 747.

In Canada, YOW, YWG, YHZ and YEG all had 747 scheduled service at one time or another in the past. YYC still gets on-again, off-again 744 flights to LHR with AC and scheduled 744F Cargolux freighters regularly.

PHX also had AA and NW (the first 744 service) and PDX had NW.

Now for the shocker. TUS, according to an old OAG I have somewhere, has A weekly NW 744 flight from MSP, 1993 I believe. Let's see if anyone can explain why this was. A bit of a tease as I know a plausible explanation.

Some like CX and GA still send 747's sometimes! JAL has charter flights in summer and Polar is surposed to be returning at some stage. FJ use 737's now and UA 772ER's also AR use 342's, the rest no longer fly to AKL.

The AMD tags on AI 144/145 are handled by A310s. AMD sees no 747 service.

BLR used to have a single 744 rotation once weekly on 102/101, but it lasted only a few months and now the BOM-BLR-BOM tag is also Airbus operated. No 747 passenger service to BLR anymore, although they do see periodic 747 freighters.

PIT also had scheduled 747 service with United in addition to BA. The United services were mostly in the 70's on routings such as PIT-ORD-LAX-HNL and PIT-ORD-SFO-HNL. These ended in the very early 80's. The BA 744's were routed PIT-IAD-LGW and PIT-Montreal-LGW (742's). These varied by season and day of the week. There were also PIT-PHL-LGW routings but these were mostly flown with L10's.

I did indeed forget about LAS, which certainly has seen its share of 747 service. What about Fairbanks? I guess it's not too surprising that they would have had 747 flights but I can't think of what they might have been.

Now for the shocker. TUS, according to an old OAG I have somewhere, has A weekly NW 744 flight from MSP, 1993 I believe. Let's see if anyone can explain why this was. A bit of a tease as I know a plausible explanation.
NW used its 744s initially on the PHX routes to work the kinks out of them and get their crews familiar with the aircraft before deploying them on the long-haul routes they were intended for. Perhaps the TUS flights were tags onto the PHX flights?

Well, we used to get a Garuda 747 here in Abu Dhabi (AUH) from JKT, with onward service to LGW..But Garuda's gone now. I think BA used to fly their 747s here before the 777 came along, but I'm not really sure.

Currently, only one airline--Lufthansa--serves AUH with a 747(-400), but that flight does go to DXB before returning to FRA. Until a couple of months ago, this flight was operated by an A340.

Those are the only ones I can think of so far!

POS, Trinidad, used to have several 747 services on a regular basis. BA served it until 1994 with 2 weekly rotations from LGW via BGI. KLM used the 747-300 from AMS via PBM or CUR until 1993. Further into the past, both PA and AC have used the Jumbos on POS services. The last operator was Tower which ceased serving POS in 2000 (just about when it went under). Occasional cargo Jumbos still fly there but no pax ones.

CVG I think gets an occassional NW Cargo 747 if I am not mistaken.

CLE- don't they occassionally get NW 744s if there is a weather problem at DTW? I thought CLE was one of DTW's alternates if there is a storm.

Another Airport that I know got a 747 this past summer.

There was some really bad storms at DTW during the summer on a couple seperate days and I know Northwest flew a 744 from KIX and a DC-10 from FCO there one day. Another stormy day in Detroit NW flew a couple 747s from NRT Flights 12 and 86 to Toledo till the weather cleared

Good guess JohnJ but sadly wrong. The inagural flight went MSP-PHX-LAX-MSP.

Any other guesses? Hint large and blue south of the terminal. If anyone guesses correctly, I'll give the true answer. I know it will make no sense but I feel like playing tonight.

Well, I guess the only way to approach this is to try to narrow down the possibilities. The most notable thing I know about Tucson is Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, but I can't imagine that played much of a role in NW flying a 747-400 into TUS. Following up on your clue, I checked an aerial image of TUS airport. There was a large building across the runway and to the south of the terminal buildings, but there were no aircraft around the building. A little further digging on the Internet revealed that Hamilton Aerospace Technologies does large aircraft/airliner maintenance at TUS. Are they a factor in answering this question?
