Is There Space For A Laptop On An ERJ-145?

Fri Dec 13, 2002 9:46 am

I'm flying on a Tyrolean (OS) Airways ERJ-145 tomorrow, TLL-VIE. The flight is 2:20 so I'd like to get some work done on this long flight. Are the tray tables and seat pitch adequate for using a laptop? I never have trouble on long-haul flights in wide-bodies (Y-class), but I do remember a few years ago I was on some type of RJ flight in the US and the space was so inadequate I had to tilt the screen towards me to where it was almost unreadable.

I just flew on an E145 two weeks ago and it was a very tight fit. I had just enough room to pull down my traytable and lay my spiral notebook on it so I could take notes for my trip report. I'm 1.55 m tall and 100 kg (5'1" 220 lbs.), to give you an idea of my size.

I'd say it depends on the size of your laptop.

I'm an F/A on the EMB-145/140/135 and there is enough space to use a average size laptop but in my opinion the best seat to use a laptop would be rows 1A, 3BC, and the exit row. Those rows will give you plenty of space to use a laptop
I reject your reality and subsitute my own

I've used laptops on a number of Continental Express EMB-145 flights and haven't had a problem - although as Viflyer said you're better off if you use the seats he mentioned.

Hopefully it won't be a full flight - try and get a seat the BC side of the aircraft with an open seat next to you - that way you'll be able to spread out a little. If it's a full flight, get a seat on the A side.

Have a fun flight, although you'll be thankful it isn't more than a 2:20 hour flight!

Personally, I don't like the ERJs because at 5'11" (about 1.85-1.9 M) you have to duck your head about three inches to walk down the aisle. However, on my USAir CLT-CAE flight, I determined that there is about the same pitch and breadth as any other commercial aircraft.

But I much prefer the Mesa CRJs I flew from PHX-ELP and back.

Actually Shaun, If you have one of those Sony VAIO laptops, you can rest assured that the captain will come out of the cockpit and demand that you put it up.  Laugh out loud
