RUMOR: LH/PrivatAir To Extend BBJ Longhaul Service

Fri Dec 13, 2002 6:15 pm

From a usually quite reliable source I heard that LH and PrivatAir are planning to increase the cooperation as both partners are highly satisfied with the current DUS-EWR operations. Therefore, a number of routes are under investigation:

TXL-IAD
DUS-ORD
FRA-CLT
HAM-ORD
HAM-EWR
MUC-(Bangalore)
STR-DTW

PrivatAir is planning to purchase up to 10 737BBJ or A318CJ to support there operations.

Who thought of this a couple of years ago?

Anyway, it is a good idea. Whats about flights to Japan?

Bangalore would have been BLR.

Wouldn't that hurt Lufthansa's own flights via FRA, CPH and other hubs ?

Perhaps not more passengers start flying LH, just different flights ..

Strangely, Duesseldorf-Dortmund-Essen is one of the most densely populated regions in Europe, and a good portion of German businesses are there. There's probably a good amount of high-fare travel from there.

The BBJ (hopefully soon ACJ) flights really don't cull that many total passengers per flight... but does give more capacity in business for other LH connections from FRA and MUC.

Gigneil,
The problem that DUS has is not so much that there is a limited amount of people that could fill up the flights but more the limited capacity of the airport.
DUS will always stay what it is as long as politics does not change the setup limitations which would lead to an expansion of the airport as it is needed and not as it is allowed (which is none...)

And since 18 million people in the "Ruhrgebiet" don't all want to fly to one and the same place (except maybe PMI...) it results in those small pax numbers being serviced by the BBJ-idea started on DUS-EWR. For UA, CO, AA, AC, TG,... and all the other airlines that served the airport in the past cut the flights since they can fill their planes up to the last set to FRA, AMS or others and have the people brought to Düsseldorf by partnerairlines. So as long as there is no expansion possible the current situation will not change.

Another problem of DUS is the short runway which does not allow a MTOW-loaded widebody take off for flights which have potencial such as DUS-NRT or DUS-SEL.

Sailororion,
Did you really mean `318'CJ ?
Or was that a typo for 319?

oh, would i love to see these flights surface!
there´s also been an interesting article in this week´s edition of Flight International, i believe this one particular article is also available online.

however, it´s strange to see that they´re thinking of TXL-IAD since some many voices claimed the LH A340 service between these two capitals was pulled due to poor loads in First and Biz class. but there would be no First class on this BBJ/ACJ service, so who knows?

the most surprising is FRA-CLT, imo. what is so special about CLT?

also interesting would be MUC-BLR (bangalore). however, to do so, LH would first need additional traffic rights and as we all know, the Indian authorities are very restrictive. i believe LH will introduce three additional frequencies to BLR in January, i read that on www.finanznachrichten.de (link doesn´t work), which has already astonished since to my best believe, LH is already adding three more flights a week on FRA-BLR which is three more than LH was originally granted.

STR-DTW, since this service is currently exclusively operated by Daimler Chrysler for its employees, i could very well imagine they would be glad to pass this service on to LH since it must cost them quite some money to keep up a small and exclusive airline operation. and afaik, LH itself has already been considering taking over this service
does anyone know how many seats this daimler chrysler ACJ provides? i mean, if it´s just about 30, than LH would have about 18 additional seats to fill up...

cheers

Charlotte is a major financial center in the US. Whatever banks aren't in New York or San Francisco, are in Charlotte.

The Lufthansa / Privatair evaluation of the DUS-NY flights should be finished in December. Any news ?

LH is already adding three more flights a week on FRA-BLR which is three more than LH was originally granted.

The additional FRA-BLR frequencies are extra-bilateral and are part of the Indian government's experiment with unilateral seasonal open skies policy (to be repeated next year). The extra flights may be operated only until March 15, and I believe LH is operating them until March 12 and then discontinuing them.

Why does LH needs Privatair to extend this new kind of service, they could operate without any problem a fleet of A319CJ...

''the most surprising is FRA-CLT, imo. what is so special about CLT?''

CLT is also close to Greenville which has several large German businesses ..

For awhile, CLT had 742 service on LH to FRA. Although I'd imagine that US Airways CLT-FRA is enough for that market.

DaimlerChrysler's A319CJ "Transatlantic Star" has 44 seats. It operates STR-PTK.

Charlotte is home to 2 of the largest banks in the US, as well as several german companies (Siemens, Continental Tire, BMW in Greer SC and I'm sure there are others.

From what I heard the decision whether to use A319CJs or B737BBJs on those flights is still open. PrivatAir will use B737BBJs and A319CJs anyway, as the shuttle flights on behalf of EADS/Airbus will be operated with two A319CJs.

well an aquaintance is the US side representative of PrivatAir and said that the Airbus will be for 'private use' -- while the BBJs will stick to the scheduled, public operations. PrivatAir will only fly the Airbus, they will not own them....
