Where Do They Go After The 777?

In a thread "Airlines Planning To Dump The 747?" Na wrote:

Without discussing whether this is a fact or not I wonder what it means for Boeing.

I understand that many airlines - as stated in that thread - are presently going from an old Boeing aircraft as the 747 to a newer, leaner Boeing aircraft as the 777. And I guess that is not completely bad for the manufacturer even if there is a risk some airlines will end buying an Airbus instead.

But what is the case with those getting rid of their 777s? Are they lost for Boeing or still the 747 and the 767 are an alternative?

I hardly doubt Airlines are shedding their 777's faster than they are shedding their 747's. It doesn't make economical sense. The only one I can think of off-hand getting rid of SOME 777's is British Airways, but they are getting rid of their market A 777-200's with the GE90 engines. Basically, they are getting rid of all their non-ER 777's which makes some sense.

I do NOT know of any airline dumping the 777 in favor of the 767 or 747. Oh yes, Lauda Air, but the 777 didn't make too much sense for them in the first place.

Aren't Air Europa and Aeroflot also planning to get rid of their 777s? However, in both cases I think it's because the planes are too big for them, not because they're unsatisfied with the performance.

First, and I again want to mention Boeings own statement here, it would be economically stupid for an airline that can fill 747-400s to use 777s instead.

That said its of cause fact and reality that (mostly smaller or less financially successful) airlines that had 747s in the past only because there was no alternative now utilise 777s or A340s.

But that transition period is mainly over. Unless having financial problems, almost all 744 operators around today will keep them, upgrade, replace them with newer versions - or buy the A380 instead or on top.

To answer your question whether the mentioned 777 operators are lost for Boeing its an easy question: Lauda Air is Austrian Airlines property now, an Airbus airline. Lauda is getting A330s, and all Boeings will go. Air Europe´s situation is the same more or less. Aeroflot is different, they downsize because the 777 seems to be too big and just a fleet of two isn´t very economical if you have 767s as well.

And of cause UAL747 is right, and thats not what I meant. I just said that currently I know only one airline for sure that´ll retire the 747 for good, Egyptair, but I know three that´ll dump the 777. I didn´t say there is a trend from 777s towards 744s, what definitely would be untrue.

But who knows, maybe in two years or so dozens of grey and blue 777s will swamp the Mojave desert (lets not hope so...)
