UA To Move Terminals At Lhr?

Sat Dec 14, 2002 7:06 am

Has anyone bought the latest edition of Airliner World magazine? There is a small article which mentions UA wanting to move to T1 from T3. It also mentions BA wanting to transfer all New York flights to terminal 1 aswell.

Anyone have more solid info on this?

I'm reasonably positive all of the Star Alliance carriers want to be under the same roof there, like many other places.

ADP has approved a similar plan at CDG, I once knew the timetable but I've forgotten it.

Yes, UA has suggested it's desire to operate from the same terminals as it's Star Alliance partners do. Would be interesting to see what happens when terminal 5 is completed.

Arsenal,

I saw that article too and thought it was rather odd. I was glad to see that T1 is getting a facelift, but I don't get why BA would want to move just the NY services there. I assume it because NY has the most transfer traffic T1-T4?

As a side question - is T5 intended to house all BA's operations at LHR, or just some?

As for Star operating at one terminal; that's going to take a heck of a lot of moving around with carriers at T1, T2 and T3!!!! Wouldn't T3 be a better candidate than T1 for that? Is this going to be the way forward that there will be Alliance Terminals at major airports?

cheers, Phil.

Star have long term objectives to bring together their partner carriers at major hubs. As far as LHR is concerned, most rumour has suggested that Star will move to T4 once BA moves lock-stock-and-barrel to T5, although T3 has also been rumoured to become the Star terminal.

I'm not sure if other airlines will be too pleased if BA had T5 all to themselves. Terminal 5 will be quite a large terminal, would be more productive if it housed more than just one airline. BA wants to move the New York flights to T1 since most of the transfer pax on BA use T1 for onward connections to Europe.

T3 should become the Star Alliance terminal IMO. The majority of star members are already located there, UA,AC,RG,TG,ANA,SAS, and SQ. While LH could move to T3 from T2.

I think T5 will be all BA. It would need to be big to have all BA ops though  Big grin

T2 could work quite beautifully for SkyTeam should the DL/NW/CO deal go through and Bermuda II gets a facelift. Should the NW/CO/KL consortium join SkyTeam, then SkyTeam and its partners would have about 100 flights a day, with a good number intercontinental flights. I could see T1 being non-alliance European/N. African/Middle East airlines, with T4 being long-hauls that are not with one of the big three. This would leave T3 for Star, T2 for SkyTeam, and T5 for OneWorld.

If UA moves to 1, that would still leave:
