Bored With Flying The Same Aircraft

Sun Dec 15, 2002 5:24 pm

Most of my flights are on holiday charter flights or budget flights.

The trouble is, I tend to end up flying one of two aircraft, either the 737-300/400,

or the A320.

I know they are both among the best selling aircraft in the world, but I just wish for once I could fly something different. For example;

1. An ancient 727-100, with loads of previous owners.

2. An A310.

Is there anything you would like to fly for a change.

I've never flown on anything bigger than a 722. Lots of 737s, MD80/DC9/717, and A320 derivatives, but never 757, 767, etc... Would love to fly in a DC10...

I've managed to fly a few hundred thousand miles in the past several years and never been on a 747. I'd love to fly one.

Frankly I don't care about the aircraft type if the trip is not paid for by myself (e.g. on business trips). Then my major cares are punctuality, flight time and number(or lack of) connections.

Things look different when I am flying for leisure - I try to get some new and/or exotic aircraft types under my belt. This year I managed to add the F-50 and F-70 to my "collection".  Big thumbs up

I am a frequent flyer with American Airlines and that means I spend a lot of time on MD-80s. Which, I have never really grown tired of flying on. I love the aircraft, and believe it is far more comfortable than an A320 or 737! Nonetheless, variety is the spice of life. Personally, I would like to fly on a Boeing 717 to do a little comparisan to its older brother.

Never been on one, yet.

Varig, if you want to fly the BAe/Avro, just come to Brussels, book a random flight, and you have a high chance that you fly a jumbolino  Big grin

I wouldn't say I was bored with flying the same types of aircraft but I would like to have flown on dozens of different types like some people have. My 'collection' is in my profile.

from the inside of the passenger cabin, all aircraft from any one airline often look pretty much the same.
Same seats, same FAs, same food (or what passes for it sometimes).
Only real difference is the size of the overhead lockers and the number of seats fitted.

Only differences would be aircraft used on intercontinental routes, which usually have better seats to cater to the fact that the passengers will be in them for a far longer time, and aircraft slated to be retired soon (which may well not have been upgraded with the latest new cabin to save money).
But even then, there is often little difference between types within an airline.
I wish I were flying

One of the reasons you always fly the 737 or A320 is because they are cheap to operate, and the airlines that fly them are trying to save money.

I travel a lot for work and most often fly Continental. I love them but the 737 is getting a little old. It always seems like I am on one (-300, -500, -700, or the -800). I actually have never been on one of the -900's yet, but that will not excite me much since I suspect the interiors and look are all the same.

I never get tired of the 717. I have flown on the 717 eight times, and all flights were wonderful. I flew on 2 DC9s in 1999. and I flew on 2 A320s with jetBlue last month. I just want to get on N77014 though while it is still in Peter Max Scheme.

Flightlevel,

I already understood the economics of flying the 737 and the A320, I was just making the point that it does tend to get a bit boring flying the same aircraft type all the time.

To be fair I have flown a few different aircraft types,

A300
A320
B.727
B.737 (200/300/400)
B.747
B.757
B.767
DC-9
DC-10
MD-11
F.50
F.100
Vickers Viscount

It's just lately it always seems to be the 737 and the A320.

Because my mom works for AA whenever I go away its on American. So 99% of the time its an MD-80. Because I usually fly first class you really cant get tired of a certain plane.

Planes that I have flown in:

First Class:
MD-80
737-800
767-200
767-300
757-200
F-100
DC-10
MD-11
727-200

Business:
767-300
767-200

Coach:
All the above planes and the 777

Planes Id love to fly on:
747
Concorde

I too get the same old plane blues...

I've been on so many 757s and 767s and 737s, I really want to try the 777, 747, & MD11. I finally got to ride on the A330 This year, but it felt like a wider 767.

This year I've flown,

737-300
737-500
737-800
737-700
757-200
767-200
767-300
767-400
MD-88
A330-300
CRJ-200

Adding all the planes I've ever flown doesn't really change the list:
727-200
737-200
A320, A319
L1011-1, L1011-250, L1011-500

Last year there was a little more diversity, but our diversity is quickly going away. I'm going to miss the 727... I don't see them any more in SLC.

My next three trips are no different
SLC-RNO WN 737s probably -300s or -500s
SLC-DTW 757-200, CRJ, 767-200
SLC-MCO 757-200, 767-300

I tried so hard to book my trip to MCO through ATL on a 777 or MD-11 but it was over $100 more and didn't work out with my schedule in MCO. I think I'll use my Skymiles to go to France next fall, then I'll have a chance on the 777. Does AF use a 747 to ATL as a code share? Maybe I can kill two birds with one stone!

Fully 1/4 of all my segments lifetime have been on a US Air (ways) 737-400, and about 1/8 of my segments lifetime have been on a US Air (ways) 757-200, most of those segments in the past two years or so...Im getting a little tired of them, but as I have little control over the travel planning in the house, I cant really complain...

95% of the time I am either on an MD-80 or 757. I am starting to get a little sick of them, the irony is that I am flying on a 757 for 4.5 hours next week. I don't have much control at all over the reservations in my house, so there isn't much I can do.

I've flown on most aircraft types. For some reason though I've never managed to board a 777 so that's one I'd like to try someday.. Also I've yet to fly a Bae-146 which is another... Of course it would be incredible to fly the Concorde.. and I think an IL-86 and IL-96 would be an interesting change too... It seems I'm always on a 767, A320 or A330 when I go somewhere which are nice but it's become a bit monotonous.

Bulk of my flying during 2002 has been on MD-80s.... over 30 with American (most recently N975TW on Friday), plus the odd ten or so with Delta. Last year looked similar. MD-80 is my favorite aircraft to ride on (best seat layout, good exit row room - I'm usually in 20B on American) so I don't really mind.

An aircraft I absolutely hate is the B757. I have only about three or four of them this year thankfully.

Have flown the 757 from the "front office" for 3 years now and never got bored of it.

Like one of our Captains said with regard to an afternoon Gatwick-Palma-Gatwick rotation: "It's like taking the Jag to the newsagents"

And it sure is... wonderful aircraft - will never grow tired of it. They also let me fly the 762 and 763 every so often which is good fun  Big grin

I feel sorry for spotters and photographers for the same reason these days.

When I used to go to LHR for a spotting & photo session there were

Concorde..........................BAC1-11
VC-10..............................Trident
Vanguard..........................Viscount
Herald..............................Britannia/CL-44

707/720............................727
737..................................747

DC-7.................................DC-8
DC-9.................................DC-10

Tristars

TU-104

IL18..................................IL-62

Friendship...........................F-29

That list is off the top of my head.

What have the enthusiasts of today got?

Concorde

Various lengths of 737
Various lengths of A300
Various lengths of A320

757...................................767
747...................................777

DC-10 and look alikes

Airbus A330/340

RJ's

and two or three Russian types

I know in which time I would prefer to be spotting in.

Living in Chicago and being a frequent flyer with United, I have had the priviledge to fly a wide variety of equipment, even on domestic flights. I remember there was a time when I would book my flights based on the equipment available as opposed to flight times (granted there wasn't a huge jump in fare) and most of the time I would score big time because of UA's variety. So for me, it becomes more of an issue of comparing airlines with the same fleet. For instance, I would love to see how UA's 747-400 stacks up against say Cathay's 747-400. I have heard many comments in this forum before comparing the two but I would like to see it for myself. Another one would be UA's 767's vs. AA's 767's. So since I have flown on almost every modern passenger plane type out there, I would like to see comparisons between airlines.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

In the original post you said that you fly a lot of charter.

In the UK we are lucky. We have UK charter airlines which fly the following....

Regular Charter flights
A320
A321
A300-600
A330-200
757-200
757-300
767-200
767-300
747-200
DC-10-10
DC-10-30

Occasional ad-hoc and standby aircraft seen in the last couple of years
727-200
L-1011
747-100
737-300
ATR-42-300
BAE146-200

Plus a regular TU-154 from Balkan Holidays (non-uk charter)

Have I missed any?

Craig.

Most of my flying is done with Aeromexico, and to some extent Mexicana. Therefore, I'm always either on a 757 or a MD-80, and the ocasional A320 and F-100 from Mexicana. I have yet to fly on the new A319 but I'm sure I'll get on one soon. And I will also fly on the new 737-700s of AM when they arrive. So far, planes I've flown on:

DC-8
DC-9
MD-80 (-81, -82, -83, -87 and-88)
DC-10 (10, 15 and 30)
F-100
A300
A320
B727 (-100 and 200)
B737 (-200, -300, -400, -800)
B747 (-300 and -400)
B757 (-200)
B767 (-200 and -300)
ATR-42
Saab340

I'll fky on a 777 next February, FINALLY!

Airlines: Aeromexico, Aerolitoral, Mexicana, Aviacsa, Taesa, American, United, Delta, Continental, Panam, UsAirways, Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways, Deutsche BA, Corsair, Swissair.

other than that... 737 400/300/800, MD83, 7272, turboprops...A320 series

OPPS and i went on the A300 about 4 times...
There is something special about planes....
