Korean Air Returns To Taipei After 10 Yrs Hiatus

Wed Dec 18, 2002 12:32 pm

Korean Air will resume flights between Seoul and Taipei after 10 years of hiatus.

The 3x weekly flights will be a charter programme that runs to Feb 2003.

Korean and Taiwanese carriers dropped flights between the 2 countries because the 2's political relationship is axed, and South Korea's rudeness to Taiwan politically, forcing Taiwan to suspend all flights between Taiwan and Korea (excluding foreign carriers).

In Addition...

Korean Air will be operating B737-800 on this route, frequencies may increase to 5x weekly, subject to Government Approval.

Taiwan's FAT and Transasia Airways has also granted rights to fly Taipei-Yangyang to Feb 2003.

Yeah, last year I wanted to fly ICN-TPE and as far as I remember only TG, SQ and CX offered non-stop flights. That's why I decided to fly: ICN-HKG with Korean 773 and than HKG-TPE with China Airlines 747-200 (!).

Rumor has it, that when full rights are granted, there will be freighter flights too. It will open up a newer market for KE, which would be nice.

Hmmm...I wonder if Mainland China's political pressure will force KE to create a "Korean Asia Airways" to serve TPE. JL, BA, AF, KL and the like have subsidiaries formed for this purpose, I wonder if KE will do the same?

Flyboy81, the flight programme will be a charter, so there will be no "Korean Asia Airways".

China's political pressure is not really a major concern anymore.
