Why No GECAS/ILFC Order For The 772LR?

Thu Dec 19, 2002 2:17 am

I find it very interesting that GECAS has until now placed no orders for Boeing's 777-200LR. I'd imagine many (if not most) carriers would rather attempt a CX-like trial lease with such a niche aircraft as opposed to purchasing them outright. Not to mention the fact that it would specifically strengthen GEAE as a whole. Also, what of ILFC? Any specific reason given as to why they've chosen not to... especially when both have signed on for the 773ER and A345??

There have been arguments about whether people want to fly twins on 18+ hour flights, coupled with the lack of interest by airlines in general. Also, the plane's 2006 availability and relatively niche status tends to have people interested in just going with the A345.

"There have been arguments about whether people want to fly twins on 18+ hour flights"

Which to me is an utterly senseless arguement considering that a 14,15, 16hr flight (be it over land or water.... or most likely both on a flight that long) is to a pax no different than an 18hr. Witness EWR-HKG, CAN-LAX, HKG-LAS, etc.

I personally would much rather be on a twin and no more than 3.5hr away from land than much have 2 extra engines.....

GECAS/ILFC usually only orders in-demand aircraft as they are often placed with airline customers after ordering.

...and yet, they ordered the 764ER.........

Also, the plane's 2006 availability

The plane will be available early summer of 2005, not 2006. Was originally due out in the early winter of 2004 before its 18month production freeze.

Maybe its lack of cargo space when compared to the A345 ? Or just as likely the fact that it is still to all intents a virtual plane - the design hasn't been nearly completed yet whereas the A345 will be flying with customers very shortly.

But also because generally there is a concern amongst some passengers (rightly or wrongly) about spending 18 hours in the air on a twinjet - Concordeboy makes a good point about always being within 3 / 3.5 hours of land on a twin - but there are very few places on the planet where you are much further away from a landing spot and even then for only a relatively short amount of time during the flight - I have no problems flying on a twin or a quad longhaul - but when I look out the windows of a 744 and see two engines on each wing - I always sleep a bit more soundly than I do on a 777 or A330. Thats the reason why, for me, nothing touches the 744 !!

those order were either cancelled or converted to the 763. Other than DL/CO, no orders for the 764 remain.

The A345 also had a 3-year headstart on the 772LR as well... least you forget.

either ILFC or GECAS ordered 7 764's soon after the program started. they later reduced this order to 1 aircraft, then cancelled this one. no doubt they expected the 764 to sell widely and well.

Concordeboy-

The 772LR will not be available before the beginning of 2006. The Seattle Post Intelligencer has several mentions of it in their "Boeing" section.

All work on it is presently halted until next year, according to the same sources.

As has always been argued, the 772LR and A345 cater to a very small market - those wanting to fly nonstops around the world. Its arguable that there might not even be room for two planes in that space, and a several year head start could tip the favor to Airbus.
