CoEx/ExpressJet Expansion In 2003

Thu Dec 19, 2002 9:06 am

I ran across this elsewhere but can't find any reference to it at a.net.

At the Smith Barney conference, ExpressJet presented. One of the slides shows their planned growth for 2003. Of course, in a volatile industry everything is subject to change. But for those interested here are CoEx's possible new routes for next year.

In the west it looks like new service at FAT, BOI, COS, DEN, and ABQ among others.

I wonder why COex may start service to DEN. Continental already has 2 daily flights to Denver from CLE. Would this be for increased frequency?

I'm not sure if it is Denver or not. It's hard to tell from this map and I'm not as familiar with the geography of the state. So it could be increased frequency. The other possibility is that it is new service at another airport. But I'm not sure what is located in that corner of the state. Steamboat maybe? or another resort area?

Maybe the flights are out of IAH, or EWR, Expressjet flys from all the hubs, not just CLE

I'm thinking that maybe Colorado Springs. Also looks like Newark-Tulsa and Houston-Tucson are on that map, and so is Cleveland-Miami. CO only has one daily MIA-CLE run (and I think three from FLL). Putting an RJ or two on the route would be great.

Cetainly EWR-DEN stands a possible shot; after all, there's a reason they wanted the EMB-145XR, with near-transcon range. If not to do things like EWR-DEN, and CLE-West Coast, what then?

Houston-Tucson is a frequency increase... for the spring it is 2x 733 and 1x ERJ. I'd suspect that some of the expansion will be frequency increases.

Well look at this. ExpressJet to MIA is already loaded in the scheds. Starts in 1 May 2003 with a daily ERJ...

CO 2698 CLE 0915-1215 MIA
CO 2699 MIA 1305-1607 CLE

Mark,

Where did you get it from the schedules for first ERJ to MIA, DEN flight, too. I decide that will be used ERJXR with more range nonstop flight, too. How about more expansion need to do into 2003? Please let us know!!!! Thanks!

Sllevin,

Cetainly EWR-DEN stands a possible shot

EWR-DEN is not a thin route. United has a daily 777 on that route. the ERJ-145XR is designed to travel thin routes.

CLE-DEN makes more sense and supposidly it's in the schedules according to MAH4546.

From the map, like MAH4546 said, it looks like Colorado Springs. DEN is not that far south.

Or, they didn't do a good job making that map.

If you look for early next spring, COEX starts one-daily IAH-PHX, and IAH-TUS, as well.

We've heard that COEX would like to start service to DSM, BHM, AUS, SAT, ABQ, DEN out of CLE. And yes, the DEN service would augment the already daily mainline service.

This will be the first and only ERJ-145 flight in Denver.

Good, some more variety.  Smile

BA. don't bet on that yet. There is talk of an ERJ mini-hub in like DEN or LAX, so this may or may not be the only ERJ service to DEN. With 275 RJ's eventually in the fleet the bloody things have to fly somewhere beyond the traditional CO Hubs, one would think!  Smile

Doesn't Express Jet already fly from IAH to COS?? To me that's what it looks like instead of DEN. But then again, CLE - COS would be a surprise to me...so who knows!

Flyinryan99,

Yes IAH-COS is a current ERJ route. These CLE-DEN and CLE-MIA runs are supposed to increase frequencies to these big markets. That's how you get the yields up. As for Denver, I think we are waiting for UA to announce their May schedule before we announce something big out there. This is just a guess but if UA cuts some capicity out in DEN in a big way you might see many more ERJ's operating out of DEN to the West Coast to get som CAL flight numbers initiated out West again. LAX is another place where COEX might start a mini-focus city again placing CAL routes out there again without the higher risk factor of 737's and up initially. LGA could be another CAL/COEX stronghold again with USAir being a lessor of an entire concourse owned by CAL until 2015 and subleased to USAir. If USAIR can't pay the port authority bills, then CAL has to pay. CAl isn't going to let the concourse sit empty for a Airtran/Jetblue to enter. You will see XRJ's/LRJ's and 737's at those gates. One thing is for sure,2003 will be interesting in the airline business.

Found another route for you: CLE-MSY in June. Going from one mainline departures to day to two RJ's a day.

Alpha 1,

Good catch. I have wondered why this hasn't happened before now. MSY has been within the range of the LR's for years with weak loads on the 737 and only 1 flight a day doesn't provide the options most business travelers want. I feel for those who regularly traveled this route and were accustomed to the upgrade but feel it is in the best interest of the airline to deploy the ERJ on this route for a while and add a frequency or two.

I'm pulling this from you know where but I can see the following being announced next year.

IAH-ALB
IAH BUF
IAH MDW
IAH MGM
IAH TLH
IAH BDL
What do you think? Any additions?

IAH- TLH... That's cool to see the Continental will be moving back into TLH. We lost Continental Connection when FL moved into TLH in 2001. Another flight out west. By the way, how is SkyWest service to DFW from TLH doing, I haven't heard much about that since they started it.

Interesting change from a 737-500 to 2 RJ's on the CLE-MSY run. Wouldn't that be a slight increase in capacity, spread out over a better schedule?

And, yes, I'd love to see RJ's in here. We haven't had CO EX here in years.

I've flown EWR-OKC a few times on the ERJ-145XR. It's kind of long, 4 hours, but it sure beats a 737.

Only ever about half full, so you can grab B/C seats and lounge out a bit.

I'd actually almost always prefer an RJ over a 737, I just can't stand that airplane.

Yipieee!!!!!!!! Now I can travel coast to coast on a RJ with no room for a upgrade and no meal! Nice....... This is stating to make Southwest look better and better.

I think I will stick to Northwest and get my upgrades and meals instead of CO.....

It would be nice if CO MAINLINE could come into the Hartford market with N/S to IAH. It had a good amount of O & D traffic, and ofcourse feeder to the west. They had N/S service pre 9-11 with 737's. Oh but those were the days before ERJ-ER's.....

Actually going from a 735 to two ERJ's would be a very slight capacity cut. The 735 seats 104 while two ERJ's would be 100 seats. Of course, the extra frequencies improve things.

IIRC, CO is scheduled to return about 10 735's to their leasing companies over the course of the next 2-3 years.

Best I can tell, CLE-MIA will be only 1 RJ/day in May or so; so that's a route cut. CLE-SFO is going down to one flight/day as well in April or May something like that. Hard to see how a route can make it with only 1 flight/day-- that's totally unacceptable to business travellers. CLE-BOS seems to only be 3X day on many days of the week; you would sure think the market could support more flights than that.

CLE's second SFO flight returns in June. SFO is losing a r/t to each of CAL's hubs until summer, the traffic problem being at SFO, not the hubs.

Hopefully that is only on the days you fly it and not a norm. LOL Either way, Continental is getting a nice state tax exemption for flying the route - so they don't care.  Smile
