US Applies For DOT Slots To PNS,MOB...

USAirways has applied for the six "in-perimeter" slots that were abandoned by Spirit and Midway.

US has requested 1x daily DCA-MOB, 1x daily DCA-PNS and 1x daily DCA-SAV. All flights would be with an RJ.

Of course, the DOT would prefer these slots to go to low-fare or new entrant carriers, so it seems unlikely that US will get the slots. However, it would really kick ass to have nonstop flights from PNS to DCA. I would definitely be on that flight.

That's a pretty sharp political move on US Airways' part. Apply for the slots to serve smaller cities. But....one frequency each for an O & D route? That wouldn't be terribly convenient for business travelers, who would still have to connect for their return flight. I can't help wondering if those slots, if awarded to US, would soon wind up serving additional frequencies to places like BOS or CLT.

Did AirTran or JetBlue apply?

US Airways Express flies to JAX in that neck of the woods... one midday ERJ from DCA. It does fairly well.

A non-stop oneway is better than a connection both ways.

One flight a day isn't much, but for all three of these markets the DC area is a top three destination. Plus, DCA offers a decent number of connecting opportunities. In the case of the PNS schedule, you would leave PNS in the morning (6am) and then the flight returns in the evening which would work for business pax. The MOB and SAV schedules aren't quite as business friendly.

I don't think JBLU or AAI have applied yet. I don't think JBLU will even apply as DCA doesn't really fit in their current route system. I would expect AAI to apply very soon.

I do hope US doesn't get it...I rather see the slots go to the LCC...like BlueJet, AirTrans, or Southwest (yeah, I know they won't..but hey...it won't hurt to try to beg them).

Is there a way for the public to put a pressure on DOT to give the slots to one of the airlines I mentioned above?

And, where do we go on DOT website to see who applied for the slots?

I don't think US Airways will get the slots. Delta applied for similar routing several years ago, with ASA operating the flights, and were turned down, and those slots went to Frontier, Midway, Spirit, and ATA.
