US 737 IFE System Circa 1995...individual Games?

Sat Dec 21, 2002 11:30 am

Hello,

When I was about 10 years old, my parents and I took a trip to PHX...this was in late February/early March of 1995. The flights were US 1 PHL-PHX and US 624 PHX-PHL, and the outbound leg was on a 733, and the return was on a 734. I have a clear memory on the outbound flight of an IFE system that at that age blew my mind...it was a unit that consisted of a black and white screen, and a handset/phone from the armrest, and for a small fee (I remember my dad swiping his credit card through the handset), you could play all sorts of games on it...the game I remember the most was one in which you were given a "suitcase" and a bunch of travel items and you had to pack your bags but be able to fit everything into it...anyway, the point is, on that flight it kept me occupied the entire 4 hours or so, but on 2 or 3 US 737 flights after that trip, the systems were there but no longer working, and after a few months they were gone completely...

Does anyone have any idea what I am talking about and can provide more detail regarding it...it would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks
Greg

The same system was installed on Continental, America West and some of Carnival Air's planes. It was a small black and white screen with the inseat hand held phone unit being the remote/keyboard. You could play several games for a fee as well as send faxes. It also contained several newspapers and magazine sections which you could read for free. Most of the versions also had interactive airport maps and city maps. Most airlines and car rentals included free access to their reservations lines too. It was supposed to eventually be upgraded to show movies but nothing came of it. The company which provided the system started having financial difficulties so the airlines decided to remove the system.

There is an illustrated article on one Airliner's mag. (about 5 yrs old). I have it somewhere if you need more info.

Thanks for the info...it sounds like the same thing...I was looking for info on when US installed it, then stopped the service, and also the manufacturer of the service and the system name, etc.

Thanks again,

It was actually called In-Flight Phone Corp. America West, Continental, USAir, and Carnival used the system as of January 1996. An interesting note, it ran digital at 9600 baud.

I recall this on America West back then.... this article has several screenshots of the America West system... two pages long. I'd be more than happy to tear it out and send it to you (not much else is left of this magazine besides this article and a few other pages, it was cannibalized for some reason or another long ago).

If you want it, let me know (e-mail address is in profile).
