QF Service To SFO.....

Sat Dec 21, 2002 2:33 pm

Can anybody tell me if QF has ever serviced SFO? If they have, why was service discontinued? If they haven't.....Why not? This question has been bugging me for the last couple of days and I know somebody on here will have the answer!

Thanks!

Yes, Qantas used to serve San Fran. with almost every aircraft type! The last services were flown with Boeing 767-338ERs, and have included Boeing 747-38SP non-stop services to Sydney (Sydney to San Francisco is shorter than Sydney to Los Angeles!).

I knew AC flew YVR-SYD via HNL with a 763.

The farce that is the IATA schedules page shows air canada has filed to fly nonstop YVR-SYD with an A345.

Is that really necessary? Can't a 343 do that route just fine?

MrBA,

Unfortunately, QANTAS no longer serves YVR with their own equipment. A few years back they tried it for a short time when they lost their codeshare partner, Canadian Airlines. I guess it just didn't make much flying their own planes all the way to YVR.

I believe they fly YVR passenger to LAX and then use Alaska for the flight north. It was nice seeing the kangaroo at YVR.

I find it interesting that AC would want to fly YVR-SYD non-stop. It seems to make sense routing through HNL, so they can carry HNL and SYD passengers. How long would the YVR-SYD flight be?

In the 70's, QF's primary US gateway was SFO. ANZ flew to LAX. QF added LAX in the early 80's and slowly built up the LAX gateway and drew down the SFO gateway.

Regarding the proposed AC YVR-SYD 345 nonstop, AC has also proposed a daily YYZ-HKG nonstop 345. Since AC will only be getting 2 345's next year, only 1 of these routes will be added.

Qantas SFO flights started with Constellations.

When did they fly nonstop to Sydney from SFO? Must not have lasted long.

I remember taking the 747Combi SYD-NAN-HNL-LAX and at HNL there was a Qantas 767 for Honolulu. It was a mini-hub a little like SIN nowadays, with half the passengers swapping planes.

Timz - non-stop flights to SFO were added at the same time as non-stop flights to SFO, and were operated using 74L's - it was basically a three days per week service to both LAX and SFO, operating on alternate days, with one day per week kept for maintenance.

San Fran was the domain of the QF3, which now terminates in Honolulu.

Back in 1983 I flew on a Qantas 747-200, which went SYD-HNL-SFO-HNL-SYD. That was back when Qantas was an all 747 airline.
What year did Qantas drop SFO? Also, why?
