Looking For Zambia Airways DC-10?

Sat Dec 21, 2002 8:01 pm

I flew on this beautiful aircraft many times.
Zambia Airways got this DC10-30 reg. N3016Z in 1984 up until she ceased operations in 1994. The aircraft was flown to New York JFK via Monrovia, London LHR, FRA, Rome FCO, LCA, BOM, and JNB regular basis.
If I'm not mistaken, it must have been grounded at LHR after arrival from LUN (Lusaka) some time end of 1994. The aircraft started operating with Monarch after about 2 years.
Anyone know where this 18 year old aircraft is now? Will it fly again?

Thanks Bill. Now that she is stored at MAN can one lease her or is that the end of this DC10?
Also, why is she stored and not in the air? That must be very unhealthy for her sitting on the ground like that.
I remember at one time when the Zambians had her, she must have been very happy because she hardly sat on the ground! At one time when I happened to be at LUN, she had just arrived from JFK and within 2 hours she was off to JFK again and after she got back again she would take off for LHR and back again to do BOM as well. It would be a little difficult for her to do a long haul flight having to depart in the afternoon from LUN with the loads she had so on some days she would be flown to JNB to pick passengers from there and fuel, arrive back in LUN and then take off for LHR for example.

Hi Konstantinos

When we (Monarch) acquired our DC10 she was, at the time, one of the lowest hours and cycles DC10’s around and flew very hard for us for three years, mainly on longhaul flights to Florida and the Caribbean. Unfortunately when she went tech it was always a nightmare as it was a one-aircraft fleet but the crews and pax enjoyed flying it.

When our A330’s arrived they effectively replaced the DC10 which then started doing more shorthaul work or on standby in the event of tech problems, sadly this wasn’t what it was designed for, and suffered from sitting around waiting to fly, in that tech problems seemed to increase.

In Winter 2001 the aircraft was supposed to undergo a floor strengthening modification which was extremely expensive, had Sep 11 not happened this would probably have gone ahead and we would have kept her flying. We decided to ground the aircraft at the end of Summer 2001, and the aircraft is stored at MAN. It will never fly for Monarch again and any future owners would still need to carry out the floor work.
