Who Would You Fly From London To NYC With?

Sun Dec 22, 2002 3:22 am

Hi

I would just like to know what you think!

who should I fly from London to New York with????

I don't want to fly BA or VS as I have flown them a few times in the past
2 years, so here are the options.

1) Air France

+ 777 (never flown one), Good looking cabin
- Via Paris and out of Heathrow would need an over night at LHR
Cost... GBP207.00 + tax

2) American Airlines

+ 777, 35'' seat pitch, direct flight, would not need LHR overnight
- Charge for drinks, flown them before, check in at heathrow
don't like two men checking in together, last time made us
check in at different desks. I don't like this as we would want to be
seated together and we only ever check in one bag. So I
could not say that I own everything in it.
Cost...GBP 152.00 + tax (yes I know its the best value but
I am only going to have one long haul trip next year so money its
not the main point)

3) KLM

+ Out of London City 20 mins from my house, like the look
of there aircraft.
- No PTV's and its a 744 and there is a 3 hr lay over at AMS each way
Cost...GBP220.00 + tax

4) Aer Lingus

+ Could fly back into London City, but would have to go out
from Heathrow, My national carrier. Never Flown them, US
immigration would be at SNN or DUB.
- Flying out of LHR and back into LCY could be a bit of a pain
we would have to get the train to Heathrow and a cab home
from city. not all aircraft have ptv's. Not had that many good
reports about them
Cost...GBP 200.00 + tax

Don't forget Kuwait Airways or Air India...  Big grin

Well, so you're going for the inferior options as you are fed up with the great VS (and, to a lesser extent, BA) flight experiences?

I'm a fan of LCY, so take KLM. Schiphol is a nice airport for passengers, if I remember correctly. Much better than LHR, and CDG (where the nasty security people and passport control guys wouldn't even speak English the last time I was there. And I don't speak French)

Or maybe Swiss? Change in Geneva or Zurich...

What about Continental? You're guaranteed to fly on one of the newest planes in the sky. Isn't EWR the closest airport to NYC anyway?

It depends where you want to fly from and what airport you wish to fly into. I would choose Virgin Atlantic over all the others, even for economy class, but we warned, their seat pitch in economy is stingy and there is little in the way of legroom, but the service is unbeatable and the atmosphere, fun and relaxing.

Continental would be my choice, from Gatwick to Newark.

British Airways would also be a fine, reliable choice. I wouldn't fly AA except for their MRTC. Other than that, UA and AA have standard service across the Atlantic, nothing exceptional, nothing bad, just indifferent.

You can pre-reserve seats on AA, so if you and your mate book seats next to each other you should get those seats even if you check in seperately.

I've flown LHR-JFK on British Airways, United and Kuwait airways, and i must say, the service was very good on all 3 carriers. Seat pitch on KU was a little tight, service decent though. Despite the bad press about US carriers, UA has quality service on transatlantic flights IMO. Since money is no objective, KLM would be a decent choice, plus you get to see AMS.

I would fly Air India because they offer the same stuff but for a lower price and since I'm Indian, I would fly them because they do have pretty ladies in Salwar Kameezes or Sari's! It is also fun to watch the people push and shove w/ their 5+ bags in hand.

Solid Gold AA! MRTC is always a plus, 777s are quiet new aircraft, seats are comfy, I enjoy their food quite a lot. T3 isn't too bad at all. The JFK terminal is sub-par and you would have a better time at T1 or T4 but I still say AA.

EWR is closer to the city then JFK by far. You can now take a train to New York from EWR, and cannot from JFK. On Aer Lingus, to clear customs in Ireland over New York is a great benefit. The lines can be very long in New York.

Another good one is Singapore from Amsterdam or Frankfurt. You could hook up through FRA of AMS on BritishMidland as part of Star Alliance. SQ is great!

All the fares you quoted are fantastic!

You know, I just had to make the same choice. I'm going to Dublin, and I was considering Aer Lingus directly there, but after hearing about their bad service I chose AA to LHR (from JFK). The rates were cheap, and they havew good service and GREAT legroom. Amnother airline that flies JFK-LHR is Air India. You may wish to consider them They use 744s. Overall, I'd pick AA> You get more room, and thats important. Service will be good on AA.

I don't know what your circumstances are, but there are some terrific deals on Transatlantic business class fares through January, I believe. About $1200US round trip. You might want to splurge a little, although it will spoil you for future flights in the back cabin.
