Catch Me If You Can Errors

Fri Dec 27, 2002 1:25 pm

Hey, just saw this great movie.

Spielberg usually is meticulous with detail, but I caught a few aviation errors.

(1) There is no Runway '44' at La Guardia... let alone anywhere

(2) Us aviation freaks know that was a picture of a TWA 767 landing...

Hollywood very very seldom gets airplanes right....Ya know what I mean like you see a DC10 on the outside and a 747 on the inside?????. Or the occasional WIDEBODY 737 in movies and T.V. from time to time....

also, I think the TWA logo that they show at the airport counter (the TV ad shows this) came around AFTER the time period referenced in the movie. It probably should have been the older 'globe' logo that they used.

Hey, where can I get one of those old blue "Pan Am" square carryon bags the stews use in the movie?

I also noticed those errors. And since I work in a print shop, I noticed some errors about the printing press he was running in France. Those are large, oversize presses and you would never print anything as small as a check like that. (Remember when the stop button is pressed, and INDIVIDUAL checks go flying everywhere?) You would normally run checks like that multiple up, like say 20 checks per sheet of paper. It was funny; I went with a bunch of people from work and we all had a good laugh!

You can get those square Pan Am bags on ebay...got mine for about $9...I do not think they were intended for stews.. at the time, airlines gave logo flight bags to passengers as part of the fare.

OK, who really cares if the production crew got a few small, inane, airline facts wrong with the movie? Their main concern is to ensure the movie has a good plot & storyline, and make it something that the rest of the world wants to see.

I care. Someone out there is getting paid good $$$ for research and continuity....why not hire an unemployed airline employee who's also an aviation nut. I'm sure there's PLENTY out there these days...

I for one wasn't gonna see the movie anyway as I'm not a fan of Speilberg (Schindler's List excepted), DeCRAPrio or Hanks. These errors just confirmed my decision.

Stretch 8,
You can also get those type of bags at conventions, such as AI. I also saw them at a smaller convention in Newark, NJ this September. They are very nice, I got one for a friend and she loves it!

P.S. I was in a store and saw a bag that was selling at a convention for around $10 that was being sold for $250  Laugh out loud  Nuts

I didn't see any major errors unlike any other typical movie dealing with aviation. Actually, I thought it was very well done. More detail then usual and it was very cool seeing the old TWA, Eastern, and Pan Am logos all over the airports they filmed in. They even put the Pan Am name back on their building in New York City.

Come on Guys....I thought that the movie was great. Not only did it glorify my future profession (too bad its not quite that way anymore...), but it was just a damned cool movie. I am a pilot and i too noticed the errors, but I did not waste anytime thinking about them. We, like any people educated in a specific field, will know more then the generaly viewing public. I am sure that MD's do not sit and nitpick NBC's "E.R." for accuracy...then again we pilots are known for being anal... Smile

And by the way, can you actually access the landing gear through the toilet?

All Movies Have Errors

Sat Dec 28, 2002 12:48 pm

I for one liked the movie, and I thought the aviation scenes were fairly well done. Sure, there were errors. But I bet somewhere there is a forum of taxidrivers who are upset because there were no Plymouth taxi cabs at that time, or stuff like that (I completely made up that example.) In other words, get over it, it's not a huge deal. Not only do the average movie goers not care, neither does this aviation enthusiast.

You can if you just found out your father was dead and only if you lock yourself in a lavatory with FBI agents on the other side. Big grin

In other words, NO!!!!

I just got out of the theatre maybe an hour ago, and I liked it. Nice going back to a seemingly golden age of aviation, that I'm not old enough to have experienced (taking it a little far but o well). Also it was nice seeing the inside of the TWA terminal at JFK that they just closed. Ozark if you choose not to go see this movie your missing out.

Does anyone know if the old Pan Am terminal at JFK was really used, or was that a mock-up? Also, the pilots' takeoff callouts were accurate, so it sure surprised me that the "LGA runway 44" faux pas was made.

Actually, on a VC-10, you CAN get access out of the aircraft through the lavatory. I forget some of the exact reason that Vickers had that design, but it was true enough, and it was the way Abagnale escaped from the Feds when he was first extradited back to the States.

Well, On Modern Day jets you cannot do it. Maybe Abagnale helped design that too.  Smile

These errors should be posted at nitpickers.com
And also on http://www.movie-mistakes.com.

Movie-mistakes isn't a bad site, but Nitpickers.com is much better. Submissions to Nitpickers.com get posted much more quickly because registered users with three or more posted nitpicks to their credit get to vote on new ones. In additon, Nitpickers.com has a "comment" function, under which registered users can post comments on existing nitpicks. These can be done to offer alternate explanations, or to expound on points, and sometimes leads to quite a give-and-take as multiple comments build up. There's also a process for refuting incorrect or misleading nitpicks, with a group of regular posters known as "Master Nitpickers" (of which I'm one) given the authority to cast stay-or-go votes on these. Lastly, there are discussion boards for registered users. All in all, Nitpickers.com has a freewheeling, democratic atmosphere, while Movie-mistakes is more of a dry reference site.

I think the runway 44 thing was intentional to show that Abignale was NOT a pilot and didn't know much about aviation...

I laughed when he said that also. I was the only one who laughed too. *sigh*

Did anyone else catch the new-body style Ford F-series as Leo runs away from the plane? I wondered how he escaped from the lav, there's obviously no way to get from the lav to the landing gear. Maybe,as stated above, the r/w 44 was said on purpose to show he oviously knew nothing about avaiation.
BTW,I love the Goldfinger scenes! Loved the Aston MArtin scene, too!

This movie was so full of errors, Nobody would have noticed if Leo just rolled down the window of the plane, and jumped out (As we all know, Real Plane windows do not roll down.)
