Aviation Themed Currency

Sat Dec 28, 2002 1:48 pm

G'day all,

I was thinking, how much aviation themed currency (notes or coins) is there out there. I don't mean special collectors issued notes/coins that were not in general circulation, but just currency in general circulation (including special coins or notes that are issued for general circulation).

To kick the ball rolling, the Australian $20 note features on one side Rev John Flynn, who started what became the Royal Flying Doctors Service. The note includes a picture of De Havilland DH-50 VH-UER.

More info about Flynn can be found at http://www.rba.gov.au/CurrencyNotes/people_on_notes.html#flynn

There was also a special issue $1 coin, commemorating Charles Kingsford Smith. Unfortunately, I don't have any on me, and can't recall what year it was issued.

So, open to the forum, what else can you come up with?

In the US, they have begun a program with our 25 cent coin, called a "quarter" where for 10 years they will commemorate each of our 50 states with a special coin, 5 states a year in order of when they joined the union...on North Carolina's quarter, it shows the Wright Flyer in flight there...extremely archaic aviation but aviation nonetheless...

That's a cool looking twenty! One of the better looking bills I've seen.

the cape Verde Islands has a note with part of the airport and planes on it. I am looking through my books to find the actual note, more to come.

Ukraine is releasing a series of coins commemorating aircraft which have been built in the Ukraine. The first in the series is this one:

It comes in 5 and 20 Hryvnia denominations.

Not sure what the others will be showing or when they will be released.

Greg - that is a very nice coin!

I also see that the Ohio Quarter features the Wright Flyer and the famous picture of Buzz Aldrin standing on the moon.

Thanks for the replies so far - keep 'em coming (with pictures too if you can  Smile)

Cheers,

G'day again,

Here are some interesting Malaysian ones which I remembered from transiting through there a few years ago.

10 Ringgit features a Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777-200

5 Ringgit shows Kuala Lumpur International Airport (in front of the twin Petronas Towers)

The 1998 Commonwealth Games Commemorative 50 Ringgit note has KLIA in the background, too.

Singapore released a S$20 banknote in 1979 when SQ was operating the Concorde. It has become quite the collector's item:

Here are some more:

Chinese Fen from 1953

20 Kwacha (Malawi) from 1998

20 Kwacha (Malawi) from 1993

5 Dollars (Fiji) from 1995

2 1/2 Gulden (Netherlands Antilles) from 1970

50 Shillings (Kenya) from 1987

Trickijedi - the Australian banknotes lend themselves to money-laundering quite well - I had one (a $5 note) in my jeans when it went through the wash just yesterday. Being made of plastic, it survived the ordeal extremely well! Big grin
