Northwest Cargo Interested In 747-400SF!

Sun Dec 29, 2002 8:31 am

According to Flight International Northwest might become the lauch customer for the 747-400 SF when the first 744 will be converted to a freighter. Although very happy with their fleet of 747-200Fs (and their low operating cost!) Northwest might need the extra range of the 744.

This news of cause will again start rumours of NWA buying some surplus 744s from United!

yeah or Northwest converting its passenger jets to freighters.

Hopefully Northwest will buy them brand new to give Boeing a boost.

Interesting info.

Although I would imagine NW focusing on removing the passenger 742 before the 742F. With a fleet of 20 742 and 12(?) 742F's, maybe NW could make UA an offer for some surplus 744's. Ironically, there are 2 -451's in the UA fleet from a cancelled NW 744 order in the mid-90's.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

That would be great! so these aircraft will have the long upper deck right?

If it's a 747-400SF, then it'll have the -400 upper deck. Which isn't advantageous, to be honest.

Correct. The planned 744SF would retain the SUD as does the 743SF.

Why isn't it good to have a -400 deck? I would thought it's seats that occupy the upper deck?

On the -400 passenger its good.

But on a freight-only aircraft, not too much point.

Although I'd think they could pack bulk mail and freight up there...

I believe that the extended deck on the 747-400 creates height requirements on cargo loaded through the nose. I would also assume that NW will be purchasing surplus United aircraft.

CX747,
You have it almost right, The 747-200/400 do have a hight limit for cargo load from the nose, but it is the same no matter if the aircraft is "SUD" or "Non-SUD" The hight limit is caused by the support trusses for the upper deck including the cockpit. There is no limit for cargo aft of the upper deck trusses, that is why the -400F is built with the "Classic" upper deck.

From all the things I have read on the proposed -400SF there is no plan to install a nose "hatch", only the port side cargo door like all 747F's have.

Only factory-fresh 747 freighters have the nose hatch.

Additionally cargo operators using the 747-300 basically have removed a significant portion of the upper deck, leaving a main deck hold similiar to the 747-100/200

There are DC9Fs. Airborne Express uses them.

Saw it today in COS.

I heard that CX is also interested in B747-400SF as its 744 passenger fleet is aging. CX may convert the several oldest 744 passenger to 744SF if Boeing has the plan worked out.

Addditional information: The first 744 converted to a freighter will not be flying before 2005.

Does NWA Cargo 747 have loadmasters?

I would very much like to find a position with NWA cargo side.

I guess I'm a little behind here. . .what does the "SF" stand for? Is it Super Freighter, or what?
