30th Anniv. Of Eastern 401's Demise

Sun Dec 29, 2002 10:27 pm

It was 30 years ago today (on Friday night, December 29, 1972, @ 11:42 PM, Florida time) that Eastern Airlines Flight 401, a Lockheed L-1011-1 Tri-Star, crashed into The Everglades near MIA.

Hard to believe it's been 3 decades since this tragedy. I can recall it well.

Anybody else have memories of this accident?

There's not one photo of Eastern's doomed Tri-Star (N310EA) in the A.Net database. But, considering she only flew for 4 months after delivery, I guess that's not too surprising.

It was a very rare loss of the durable L-1011.

Ironically, N310EA had an MSN of "1011".

Not many 1011 accidents in more than thirty years of continuous service. ......
