Hi Guys,

While trying to book and look up flights to the UK today I came across this new band of Tax....

WHAT THE HELL????? The site i was looking at was http://www.flybmi.com on the route MAN-ORD-MAN.....I am guessing this is a new tax which begun on the 1/1/2003.......if so I already hate 2003!

Full pricing is this:

Your online discount for each passenger (2x £ 5.00) GBP - £ 10.00
Applicable taxes and September 11th security charge GBP £ 133.60
Total cost of this booking GBP £ 753.60

Can someone fill me in on whats going on?

Yours Sincerely,

It's an American tax that was designed to help offset security costs. The official tax is US$2.50 or US$5 for each segment that originates in the United States. So, overall, the 9-11 tax doesn't make a big difference, it adds a max of £3 to the itenerary.

It is just the airport taxes plus a couple of dollars security tax, nothing special.

So now British passengers are to all intents and purposes paying for past f*** ups in US security. Great!

Heh yes that's exactly what it is.

Really, you're paying for our FUTURE fuckups, technically.

If you don't want to pay the tax, don't use U.S. airports. It's that simple.

It's the same thing as an airport improvement tax.... those who use a service are paying for it. Why should U.S. taxpayers foot the entire bill when half of them don't use it and millions of non-citizens use it?

Jason,

I looked for MAN-ORD-MAN on dial a flight and this is what they came up with for BMI.

BRITISH MIDLAND from MANCHESTER £226 (+ £61 tax) All taxes are approximate.

This airport tax would be £122 for two people. Add an extra fiver each for the 9/11 bit and it is about right.

I have flown eight times since 9/11 and on all the flights I have booked myself I was charged the 9/11 security tax. Even charter flights within Europe. I was told it was to cover the extra airport security.

Regards,
Craig.

If, when you come to our country, you complain about our taxes that are designed to keep our flying public safe, then do all of us a favor and stay home.

Easy lads. We Americans need our wonderful friends in the UK, and vice-versa. Let's just pay the taxes and hope nothing like 9/11 ever happens again.

A little shortsighted point of view, Seiple.
You don't have to "use" an airport to benefit from it. Just think you do not let foreigners use American airports and the imagine the impact on the economy.

Erico,

His POINT was that the fee is charged to ANYONE using a US Airport, regardless of their citizenship.

Thank you Flyboy36y

My point was that taxpayers should pay for airports (its security or whatever) even if they do not "use" them.

Pi$$es me off when staff pax get charged tax on stand-by tickets. It almost doubles the cost of the tickets, so defeats the privilidge of having them. Staff should at least pay a discounted rate in relation to the cost of the ticket, or none at all.

I would also like to add that 9/11 taxes are also added on UK internal flights.

Relax,

We are all paying taxes each time you buy a ticket. In fact the UK has some of the largest taxes of any country. If you have every flown to Auckland, Bangkok, Seoul, etc., you have to pay a departure tax in cash before entering the security screening area and it can cost up to USD$20. Although that is now changing and being added directly to the ticket costs (I think Seoul has now dropped direct payments).
