What Are The Chances Of Midwest Getting 757s?

Thu Jan 02, 2003 7:24 am

What are the chances of Midwest Airlines (aka Midwest Express) getting something bigger than an MD-80, like a 757 or something?

One of the main reasons they went for the 717s as apposed to the A318 is with regards to their seating style.

2-2 A plane like the A318, and in your case, the 757, are meant for 3-3. Taking out two middle seats is not as cost effective as taking out just one.

Obviously with the DC-9/Md-80/717 2-3 seating, taking out just one middle seat is easy, then you get your 2-2 seating that they like so much.

If they weren't affraid of the 757/A320 width, they would have orded the A318. Thusly, I can't see them bothering with a 757 size plane for many years, if ever.

Thanks for the replies. This was what I was kind of thinking. It would be good if they get a large plane at some point and start up long haul operations.

No chance. Their markets don't warrant it.

For comparison, it's about as likely as NW getting a couple of Concorde's  Smile

Theiler: I think it is a bit more likely than that.

Well, their MD-80s seat 116 and if they got 757s, they would increase their lift per aircraft by 15-20 seats in their 2x2 34" pitch configuration. That is about a 15% increase in capacity. That is not a lot for a whole new plane configuration. That is topped with a worst case increase of 33% in operating costs ($2000/hr in the YX MD-80 vs over $3000/hr in a 757-200). Thus, IMO, there are only a few, limited markets a 757 can operate while making a profit. It does not seem worth the cost to increase capacity at this time.

It could be done, They could get a 757, fit in with 2X2 seating. You'd just have one hell of a wide aisle. Perfect to play Hopscotch on  Smile

I dunno about that... NW likes things ancient. $50 says the Concordes will be ripe to their liking in about 10 to 15 years  Laugh out loud

Speaking of Midwest, wasn't the name change supposed to take place on the 1st? I haven't seen anything about it from them.

Nwa320 I think if they could pull off long haul as successful as their domestic product, it would be awesome. They are the best airline I have ever been on (and I travel a lot). Unfortunately, I don't see it happening. They fill a niche market and that is not their niche.  Smile Although Lufthansa has had a great deal of success with their all business class operation to the States.

I think they changed the name-change to March 1st or somewhere around there, when they get their first 717.

757 for Midwest?? Not a snowballs chance in ....! The Concorde with NW IS more realistic.
