Who Flies The Most Diverse Fleet?

Fri Jan 03, 2003 8:11 am

OK, so management changes, mergers happen, routes come and go, deals are done and some airlines seem to end up with the most diverse fleets! Some airlines seem to go out of their way to operate every competing aircraft type!

So, the question is: Who flies the most diverse fleet?

To start it off, I'll start with my airline, British Airways:

1. Concorde
2. Boeing 747-400
3. Boeing 777-200/ER
4. Boeing 767-300ER
5. Boeing 757-200
6. Airbus A321 (ordered)
7. Airbus A320-100/-200
8. Airbus A319
9. Boeing 737-400
10. Boeing 737-300
11. Boeing 737-500
12. AVRO RJ
13. ATR 72

.... and then if you include CitiExpress (wholly owned subsidary)
14. ATP
15. Jestream 41
16. Embraer 145
17. Dash 8 -300
18. BAe 146 -100/-200/-300

... and then, the Franchises with other types (Maersk, Comair, Loganair):
19. Canadair CRJ-200
20. Canadair CRJ-700
21. Boing 737-200
22. Boeing 727-200
23. Saab 340
24. Twin Otter
25. BN Islander

OK, is there a more diverse fleet out there?

Cheers  Smile

Off the top of my head, I thought about Aeroflot, but then again since the break-up of the Soviet bloc, it still may be Aeroflot.  Smile Must do some research here. Regards.

USAirways no longer has the F100 and you are missing the ERJ-145 that Transtates and Mesa uses for them.

AF does not operate the F70/F100, these aircraft are flown by subsidiaries like Air Littoral.
They do fly the B747-300 however, which is missing in one of the previous postings.

Yeah Subzero...

Southwest has no 737-800, but they do have a 200.

TriStar500...

Ok, include the F70 and 100 in the regionals for Air France I have on there. What about the DC-10? Isn't one of Air France's subsidiarys flying the DC-10 too Air Liberte?

ConcordeBoy- I live in U.S. and Air France doesn't even serve my hometown airport so I don't know a lot about it. I just recall thinking that I read that they were getting the A340-600. Do they have the A340-200? I believe that they used to, but do they still? The A300 is out of service right for AF?

I think if you went thru Air France's history (including subsidiaries), they flew practically all of the different main types of jet aircraft made except I think the MD-11, 757 and DC-8.

Air France has the most diverse fleet, and BA being the runner-up. Continental....considering they only operate Boeing's (even though they operate a good portion of the Boeing civil fleet), and the MD-80's, I don't consider it to be too diverse. Air France operates both Boeing, and Airbus, and their affiliates operate embraer, Bombardier, Bae, and Britten Norman. I think it is the most diverse by a landslide. BA has a nice diverse fleet as well. Love to see it.

I would regard the 319/320/321 as 1 type really.BA are greatly reducing the 752 fleet and I expect a 321 order to replace the last 15 752s soonish.
AF came to my mind too especially when they have both the CRJ+ERJ!

WestJet 8:

Don't forget that some of Air Canada's regional partners (ie Air Alliance) also fly the Beech 1900. At MHT, we get 4 of them each day that go up to YYZ.

HlywdCatft,

you´re probably right with Air France and their interesting fleet.
Two sub-types you even forgot (while A340-200 and -600 are wrong and I´m unsure about the Fokkers):
B747-300
B747-400ER F

AF´s fleet:

Concorde
737-300
737-500
747-200 (incl. 747-200F and 747-200 SUD)
747-300

A few years ago I would have said the hands down winner would be Iberia. Pulling into MAD, it was like "Jane's Airliners of the World". Every model of DC9, DC-8's, DC 10's. You could see all the latest(and earliest) Airbusses.
They were a little short on Boeing products, though Smile.

It was always a thrill going to MAD, you never knew what you'd see on the ramp.

It seems that for gross diversity, AF might have the title in Europe.TC

If you look back through history as well, I think you'll find they both operated a huge variety of types!!!

AA717 driver, your absolutely right. A couple of years ago, when the new fleet was begining to emerge, it seemed Iberia flew every commercial airplane type possible. I always think its fun that they still put their DC-8 Freighters in their Fleet section of the In Flight Mag!

HlywdCatft:
you are partly right - although I have to say that LH is doing a pretty good job on it's way to a all-Airbus fleet. Well, except of the small ac's and the freighters.

747-200's (only 2 left): I guess they will drop out in the near future - maybe as soon as the 330's are put into service.
Do728: Order has been cancelled, as well as it is very likely, that the 728 programm will be stopped, as they did not find an investor to continue that project.
Condor/Condor Berlin: I think they also have some 320's.

Finally, I think that AF cannot be beaten.

Seems that one way to find airlines with a really diverse fleet is to
stand at the door of the bankruptcy court and take a look at who's walking in.

immediately the first name which have came to my mind was Air France. They are doing really nice job with having such a diverse fleet, and it is still efficient!

I do not believe that AF is having financial troubles. Thus, I can not agree with you reasoning! No harm intended.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I'd think that United (Nasdaq Symbol: UAL) would have the most diverse fleet in the world, they fly dozens of different aircraft, and I'm including their "Express" carriers such as Air Wisconsin, and Great Lakes, INC.

Over the next few months SAA's relatively small fleet by international standards will start to look increasingly diverse as it makes the transition to a new fleet. Many of the following will be operated simultaneously for a short while:

B747-400 (with mix of RR and GE engines)
B747-300
B747-200
B747-SP
B767-200
B737-800
B737-200
A330-200 (leased from BMI)
A340-600 (first about to be delivered)
A340-200 (to be leased from Lufthansa)
A340-300E (on order, delivery Feb 2004)
A319-100 (on order)
A320-200 (on order)

Also, the following have only recently been withdrawn from the fleet:

A300
A320

If one adds the regional feeder airlines into the mix
ie SA Express:

Dash 8
Canadair RJ

SA Airlink:

Embraer 135
Jetstream 41

There is no more A310 in the AF fleet, they've all been retired in 2001 I believe...
The actual AF fleet, according to Air France Magazine, is:
25 777 22ER
16 747 400 (13 pax + 3 freighters)
21 747 200/300 (11 pax + 10 freighters)
3 767 300ER
33 737 300/500
5 Concorde
22 A340 300
9 A330 200
14 A321
63 A320 100/200
39 A319

plus the 777 300 on order, etc...

There are airlines with diverse fleets that are doing well. So it isn't neccesarily fatal. Hitting yourself on the head with a hammer isn't either - but that does'nt make it a good idea.

But of those that have gone Bankrupt in the past few years (TWA, USAIR, UNITED, ETC) almost all have had diverse fleets. Even America West has A320's, 737's and 757's. Their main competitor has just 737's.

On the other hand, the most borring airlines (the low-co's) seem to have pretty well unified fleets. Except for EasyJet and Frontier. We'll have to see how their gamble on an Airbus transition pays off.

Yes, I know America West avoided BK. Yet it would not have had it not been for the ATSB.

Air France at this moment would win hands down but I've got to put Air Canada (Incl. Tango, ZIP and Jazz) in like WestJet 8 said but with little corrections.

(44) ----more like 46 A319
(48)----- more like 50 A320
(11)----- more like 13 A321, I wonder If they are trying to beat Air France in the 320 family  Big grin
8 A330-300
9 A340-300
2 A340-500 (on order)
3 A340-600 (on order)
19 DC9's (stored)
8----- more like 20 737-200 (with ZIP Tango Jetz)
2 747-200's (stored)
7---- more like 6 (1 has been returned to the lessor) 747-400's (with different engines)
(5 767-200's)---- more like 2 767-200ER and 13 767-200.
(13 767-200ERs)
(33)---- 35 767-300ERs (This makes me wonder, how many 763 will they get to deserve Canada's market before realizing that they have too much in fleet? Big grin

(25)---- 33 CRJ's

15 types if you count stored and ordered
11 types if you don't

Jazz operates
2 types of Dash 8s (About 65 total)
Stored Fokker F28's
CRJ's
9 Bae 146-200

TOTAL: 14-North american winner?

SAA 201; Why has SAA retired the 12 A320 they had I believe If they've ordered more? Explanations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

HlywdCatft, you forgot Chautuauqua!! USAir has Mesa, Trans States and CQ! CQ probably flies the most ERJs out of those 3!

SafeFlyer, check out the following discussion http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/996921/4/ for answers to your question regarding SAA's A320's. By the way, SAA only operated 7 A320's originally, not 12.

Yeah, you are right about Chataqua. I kind of forgot about them being a USAirways carrier still. I been linking Chataqua lately with their Delta operation out of MCO.
