World Airways

Fri Jan 03, 2003 2:39 pm

Does anyone here know anything about World Airways? I have seen their MD-11's at ATL, and on the a.net photo database. What sorts of routes do they fly? Do they only operate MD-11's?

The website above will clear a lot up. I have flown on World Airways (MD-11 registered as N278WA). They are a charter company filling a variety of roles. The fleet is comprised of DC-10s and MD-11s. The latter being their flagship aircraft type. Service on my particular flight was actually quite good. The aircraft is a typical charter configuration of all coach, but I found the spacing between seats to be well (better than coach on British Airways for example). The flight attendants were very helpful and friendly and my over all experience would rate this as a good company to travel with. They have a very good safety record as well.

It might be noted they do quite a few military charter flights.

I could be wrong (considering this photo I just found)about the single config. I guess they can change it to meet customer needs.

They are flying out/to BWI almost daily (3-4 flights a day with MD-11s).
They have military contract and they fly for AMC.
Yes, they have one class configuration for 460 people in MD-11.

It is a very old company. Back in the late 70's to mid 80's, World Airways operated most of their aircraft under a scheduled passenger basis. I remember they flew BWI-OAK/LAX/MCI/LGW/SJU as well as LAX-OAK/MCI/HNL and OAK-EWR/MCI/HNL/LAX/BWI. Very briefly, they operated to BOS from EWR and LGW to FRA. Back then, they operated one class (ULTRA CLASS) service as well.

I flew on one of World's military charter MD-11ERs from BWI to KCIA and the service was excellent. Loved how quiet the MD-11 was compared to the L-1011 and the takeoff performance was very powerful with the three 62,000lb PW4462 engines.

The MD-11 with the first class seating is something dif. That operates as Sonair, its flown for one group who set up the cabin that way.

They also do a lot of cruise ship charters. I was supposed to fly them in July 2001 (JFK-IST) for a Princess cruise. But we switched to BA instead (BOS-LHR-IST). I'm glad we switched because I heard the World flight was delayed 8 hours!

Ren41:

I was also supposed to fly World in July 2001 as well for a Renaissance Cruise JFK-IST. We were asked to switch to BA instead due to overselling. But we ended up going JFK-IST on DL Business Elite! When I heard how cramped the MD-11 was, I didn't tell any fellow cruise passengers about our form of travel.

Cba,

Come to DAY, you will see plenty of World DC-10's and MD-11's! World still flies for Menlo(formerly Emery) out of DAY to cities such as Brussels, Los Angeles, and Toronto. In fact, one of their MD-11's has been taking nice winter break on the Emery ramp for the past few days now.

Angola is in Africa and has a developing oil industry. The filghts from IAH are used to send Texas oil people over to do business.

I actually knew where Angloa was  Big grin I was being a goof. Didn't they have a lot of civil war there in the 70's? Chad (with Libya's support) fighting Angola (with Cuban support)?

Can the average person buy a ticket one one of these flights?

World Airways operates contract services for the Department of Defense. They range from one-time charter flights to weekly flights. World operates from LAX and SEA to OSAN and KUNSAN AIR BASE, KOREA; YOKOTA, MISAWA AND KADENA AIR BASE, JAPAN. They have been heavily employed operating deployment charters to Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf Area. I flew them from Rhein-Main to Baltimore in the summer of 2001 returning from Kuwait, and again from Rhein-Main to Baltimore and Charleston last year.

In addition to the LAD flights from IAH, a weekly LOS is slated to start sometime this year according to http://www.flyritetime.com

THe official annoncement can be seen via this link, though IAH is not mentioned (sometimes, I wonder if Houston is even on a map!) Anyways, just pull down on the city menu and Houston along with JFK and ATL are listed.
