Mojave Plane Spotting

Sat Jan 04, 2003 5:01 am

Went to the Mojave desert this past weekend . Awesome
sight , to see so many planes parked there : I am quoting
from memory OK :
3 KLM 743s
1 Mandarin MD11
4 Virgin 742s
5 FedEx A310s
2 Continental 742s
2 British 742s
2 British 757s
8 xAA xHawaiian DC10-10s
And rows and rows of US Air 733s and 732s in both
mainliner and Metrojet liveries.
And tons of other planes that I can't even remember...
One interesting thing I'd to share with you folks who can
make it up there in person : try to go there during the
weekend : if there is no activity there , the guard will give
you a tour for $5US a head : minimum $10 .
He did drive us out there , to the field and drove through
2 rows of US Air jets , parked on both side of a dirt drive
way.
He was mentioning the day before , they had 30 height
challenged people ( OK...30 midgets ) pulling on a jumbo
for some show...
The guard is in the main bldg right below the tower , go
inside and it's the first door to the right.
It's really worth a drive out there from LA.

All 100 of them at once? I don't think so.

What are those planes doing exactly over there? I mean, are all those airliners hoping to sell them to another airliner?
Is it just one big supermarket?

MD11 would be a good market though i think, for a cargo airliner.

Another thing, how is the state inside? The outside is packed in some sort of aluminium foly, but is it as well for the inside? The cockpit eg.?

And why are the windows closed?
tnx in advance  Smile

The guard is not doing any thing illegal : his boss was there when we got back and the man asked if we enjoyed the ride out in the field.
The planes are all sealed up with foils , even the landing gears : I would guess
that the insides are kept as is , from the last day of operation and all control
systems still in place.
To think back : I was out there about 2 years ago : there used to be tons of
x PSA and x Air Cal BAE146s and tons of BA L1011s...wonder where they are
now , did not see even 1 of them ? And not too many UA planes out there this
time either.

Most of the UA stuff is stored at Victorville, along with DL planes.

I was just wondering if it was a real program or if the guard was pocketing your $5 bucks.
