Philippine Airlines At Akl?

Sun Jan 05, 2003 11:31 am

Hey Guys,

I heard that in the early mid 1990's PR were considering a service to AKL. How serious was this if it was true? Has anyone else heard anything about this?

Would they consider flying to AKL now?

The mid-1990's prior to the Asian Economic Crisis were a time of expansion and optimism for PR. Although I am not completely certain, AKL could have been a possible destination. I doubt that this is the case now. They do not even serve Europe anymore and I believe the there is greater MNL-Europe (e.g. LGW,CDG) traffic than MNL-AKL.

I hope that PR will regain its former glory. Like it did in 60/70's In those times PAL had one of the largest route network of any airline in asia. I think in the future they should order some A340-500s and do Direct MNL-ORD/EWR/YYZ because that is the only market PAL has not tapped into yet.

Thanks for the replies guys!!

It seems that even now PAL could do with extra long haul aircraft for the US services like A340's to serve HNL rather than A330's! SFO could probably do with a 744 instead of an A340. I wonder if they have any plans to return to Europe? I agree that Europe would definatly have more traffic than MNL-AKL would!

Why does it matter if they serve HNL with A340s or A330s? Aren't PAL's Airbus widebodies similarly configured.

Well the A340s have a 3 class configuration while the A330s have 2.

Ah, I thought they were more similarly configured than that.

My guess is HNL is a leisure/family oriented destination. Probably better suited to the 2 class config.
