What Is LTE's Relationship With LTU & Volare?

Sun Jan 05, 2003 11:01 pm

I have noticed recently that LTE's A320s are flying in a colorscheme similar to that of Volare, whilst their 757s retain the traditional basic LTU-style livery.

Are LTE still the Spanish subsidiary of LTU, or are they now related somehow to Volare? Can anyone expand on this issue?

LTE was co-founded by LTU on April 29, 1987 in order to gain access to other European markets than just Germany for flights from Spain. Due to legal limitations, LTU's ownership of LTE was limited to 25% at that time.
The airline was based at PMI and operated with 3 ex LTU B757-200 during most of its existence.
The operation of a Spanish affiliate became obsolete after the liberalization of the EU airline makret. Nowadays it is possible to fly between any destinations within the EU.
By 2000ish, it was decided to sell LTE or close down the operation. AFAIK, the airline is now part of some Italian travel conglomerate.

Investors linked with the management of Italy’s Volare Airlines quietly acquired LTE from LTU in mid-2001.

But although the LTE livery is similar to that of Volare Airlines the carriers are still considered separate.

LTE started with a blue livery then took the standard red lines of LTU.
The Spanish airline flies from the Canaries,Palma, and Ibiza to some European points,in Germany and the U.K.notably !!!

The new livery is totally awful, not for a holidays airline at least !!!

The original blue livery resembled the LTS livery at that time. LTS was the original name of what later became LTU Sued.

LTE is to become "Volar" in the near future (Spanish version of the Italian word "Volare") which might explain the rather basic LTE livery on the A320s. On the tail, the "V" for Volar has already been applied this spring. Before, the A320 aircraft operated all white with LTE titles only.

The Italian Volare is standardizing on Airbus A319/320/321/330, so I presume that the Boeing 757-200s of LTE/Volar will leave when their leases expire and retain the old livery until then. They also continue to operate flights for LTU International Airways although no longer part of the LTU group, so keeping the old LTU-style livery makes some sense from the marketing point of view.

An interestingp oint is, by the way, that the LTE Boeing 757s always had more seats than their LTU stablemates. Travelling on LTU in the past could result in one ending up in a LTE plane with much less seat pitch....
