Could 3-6-3 Seating Be Possible/Legal On The A380?

Tue Jan 07, 2003 4:18 am

Wondering what charter or domestic Asian operators might do with a juicy A380 on their hands. If they can squeeze 3-4-3 on a DC-10, L1011, or 777, and 3-5-3 on a 747, and even 4-3 on the old Trident, surely the mammoth A380 could handle 3-6-3! Wow...what a cattlecar!

Is the A380 wide enough to support such a configuration? If Airbus could install enough emergency exit doors, 3-6-3 should be legal, no? I heard that after the 4-3 Trident idea, a rule was set that require passengers be no more than 2 seats away from the aisle. Does that mean BOTH aisles or just AN aisle? The former would require a 3-5-3 max.

QF is planning 3-5-3 in their A380, from what I've heard.

The thing isn't all that much wider than a 744...it is, but only a foot or so, I believe.

Airbus is recommending a 3-4-3 approach.

I think with the emergency door configuration that I've seen planned for the A380 that it wouldn't be possible to have a 3-6-3 config. The passengers wouldn't be able to get out in time to satisfy most Western safety standards. This is pure conjecture, however.

Is 4-4-4 not an easier option???

EGGD, 4-4-4 would violate the "two seats away from an aisle" rule mentioned above. As far as emergency doors go, Airbus could add more. Wonder what the seating capacity would be on a 3-6-3 A380?

Is it indeed only a foot wider than a 747? If that's true I doubt 3-6-3 would be possilble. Even 3-5-3 sounds miserable though.

Isn't this new plane meant to be a step into the next-generation? I thought every seat was going to get its own armrest?? So 3-4-3 should be used to allow more space over rivals, also 35-36in pitch would be welcome!! What about 3 aisles? somehow? 2-3-3-2 would be good

The main deck cabin width of the A380 will be 21'7". The upper deck will be about 19'5".

The 747-400's cabin is 20'1" wide.

No 3-6-3 would simply not fit, but we are going to see a good number of 3-5-3 configs out there.

MattNZ, the 747 was supposed to usher in a new generation of comfort too, which it was at first with 2-4-3 seating and lounges even in coach. But as usual economics dictates and most 747s were reconfigured as cattlecars after a short time. So don't buy any of Aibus' "Next Generation" marketing tactics.

So the A380 is only going to be a foot and a half wider than a 747, indeed not enough for 3-6-3. I still loathe the thought of 3-5-3 seating...the 2-5-2 seating on DC10s, L1011s, and 777s is bad enough, if you're caught in one of the three middle seats. However, if they keep the seat pitches far enough apart, I suppose it could be more comfortable than the three airliners mentioned above. Being tallish and slender I prefer legroom to width. I'll reserve my judgement until the A380 takes to the skies and I get a chance to fly on it.

I guess much is possible with the Asian carriers on domestic routes as long as they can satisfy emergency evacuation requirements. Look for Asian domestic A380s to become giant sardine cans of the sky with up to 800 very crowded souls onboard. Then, again, they're a bit smaller than most of us so it may work out quite well.
