Short Video Of A Really Bad Approach.

Tue Jan 07, 2003 2:49 am

Makes me want to start bringing my camcorder when I go shooting...

I don't think a still image would quite capture the moment here...

All I can say is WOW, I can't imagine how green people turned on the inside of that plane!!

I have no words.

How can they let any plane landing having those weather conditions?

What a frightning video indeed...Fortunately, the crew decided to go around apparently, even though they initially thought they could land the plane (otherwise they wouldn't have made it so close to landing the aircraft)...

Thanks for the link, JeffM

Hey I think he was doing pretty well up until when he nearly crashed!!  Laugh out loud.

There were a couple of video's at the start of last year here in Britain where we had very strong winds, a couple of aircraft had real trouble at LBA and I think one at BHX (a corporate jet of some sort) scraped its wing along the runway.

Makes me want to get to the airport even more when there are windy conditions  Sad.

Who is they? It's up to the captain.

I have seen some approaches to an aircraft carrier that would make that look like a "good" approach! Problem is at sea, there usually is not a 'divert' field nearby, so a go around is usually the only option. And the runway is only a few minutes from pointing straight into the wind....

I like a good bumpy roller coaster ride sometimes when I fly, just......not that close to the ground!

 Wow!
I´d say that pilot was both brilliant and an idiot for trying to pull that stunt off.
I have seen many landings in stormy weather but either they made it or did a go arround while being well above the ground.

Another runway is needed IMHO.

I've seen maybe one like that in person, but not quite as severe as that! God I can't imagine what it was like to experience that!

That sure is wild. Reminds me of Gary Watt's familiar BA757 takeoff shot from Aberdeen.

Saw a UA express Jetstream attempt a landing in similar conditions at CRW...with similar results. They didn't make a 2nd attempt either...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Reminds me of another video of a stretch DC-8 cargo getting blown around like a leaf and forced to abort.. didn't almost strike the wing though like this one did.

bobcat-that video was for the China Airlines, generic instrument approach.
its amazing what some pilots will do to get the plane down... dont force it.. ie: AA md80 in Little Rock

The video you are speaking of is possibly this one...http://www.univers-cite.qc.ca/tucs/crash_video/

Scroll down to where it says windy landing. The video is poor quality though.

God, that was a close one. Did anybody else notice how close the right main gear tire came to touching down. That pilot need a clean pair of pants after flying that approach.

damn... I had to watch that twice just to make sure I wasn't seeing things! the plane literally danced effortlessly - any minute I expected to see a big, masculine A340 ask it to dance.
in all seriousness, that could've turned out horribly. I'm so glad it didn't, even if it was scary.

Think that DC-8 at ONT was bad?

Last night, we had a crosswind, with gusts up to 70 knots. Southwest was the only airline gutsy enough to fly out in such weather. They finally just closed the airport though.

I think the crew did an amazing job bringing that bird in. Just got a little to hard to handle when they were floating above the runway. Nice crab.

OH MY GOD !

I thought this (http://194.65.6.250/mbs/files/madeira.zip) was bad... but on that one the pilots went for a go around at about the right time... not too late like this one in Lisbon... I wonder what took him so long to decide g/a ?

Looks like TAP A321s make a habit of this kind of performance (just kidding)...
