Last NW 727 Tomorrow

Tue Jan 07, 2003 2:48 pm

Well, this is it. Tomorrow, 7 Jan 03, is the last time a NW 727 will fly a scheduled flight. It is flying a morning DEN-MSP run. I wanted to catch one for the last time but never had the time this winter. For details, look at www.nwa727.com. Farewell to a machine with quite a past...

Even though I'm a DL gal, I live in MEM where the red tails make a home... I love this bird, as I guess you can tell from my name. So my tribute to the NW 727, admittedly one of the sharpest liveries on the sharpest bird.

Sorry for all the pictures, but if any bird deserves a lengthy tribute, it's this one. I'll be sad to see it go.

Nice array of photos 727 gal!  Big thumbs up

So sad to see another go. I gladly got to ride her last this past June. DTW to Orlando and back. What a rush!

Thanks for your tribute 727 Gal, I appreciate a lot. Yeah, today is a sad day at Northwest Airlines. I absolutely love this bird, too bad I don't have the chance to fly on the last 727 before she goes away. I will miss her, wearing blue jeans, a gray cardigan and a red scarf around her neck.

As you certainly know, only Delta still has 727's left in passenger service, for another few months.

Very sad indeed...I wonder why there is no 727 Club that tries to keep a 727 alife? Probably still too many around...but you can get them really cheap and in airworthy condition!

At some point wasn't the last flight supposed to be FNT-DTW? I thought someone posted that a few months ago.

Scottys and others; I flew on my first and last Northwest 727, N202US, on December 6 , 2002 from DTW to PBI (Palm Beach International). Actually I wanted to go to Miami but I especially chose this more expensive flight and took the local train from PBI, especially to log a NW 727 (I love the plane and since 2000 I flew Iberia, Delta, ATA, United, Pan Am III, Aerolineas Internacionales (Mexicana was changed to a A-320) and now Northwest 727).
It was a great flight. We took off from freezing and snowy DTW and even while we were full to capacity it climbed amazingly quick for a 722. The interior still looked quite fresh and clean. Service on the 2,5 hour flight were drinks and a granola bar (because it was a morning flight, in the afternoons and evenings they serve a small bag of pretzils). At PBI, I waited to watch my NW 727 take off again, a sight I probably would never see again (a few days later, I even saw no NW 727s when I changed planes again at DTW, arrived by DC-9).

My last NW 727 flight was supposed to be this past June DTW-BOS but for one reason or another our flight got changed and we ended up on an A320. So that makes my final 727 flight on December 23, 2001 DTW-MIA of which I flew first class (rare for me, so it was an even more fun experience).

Well I have my only time when I saw one and it's right here.

When I was at MKE, I was waiting on the approach area for 7R when I saw the 727. I was so happy to see it and to take a photo of it taxiing to 7R. I was with my cousin and she drove me over there to the area. It was a nice time to see it. When I get a good scan of it I can show it to you all.

I think Royal (clickhappy) posted that it was DTW-GRR (and on the 6th).

Guys, I hate to burst your bubble, but that DEN-MSP is showing an A320. I really thought the last flight was yesterday.

Sad, very sad. The 727 looked great in NW colors. Another airline rids itself of the best jet airliner ever built (IMO) for newer, modern stuff.  Sad

I'm just south of Denver. If only I could go to see it leave the gate.

If we could go through security without tickets, I would definately take the day off and go.

I read that 3 NW 727's are going to Maxton,NC for storage along with 2 or 3 NW DC-10-30's and 741's. I will always remember my fave 727 flight - 9-1-01 when I flew on N7438U ORD-LAS to see Madonna. That 72 was 100% full , got a nice bagel sandwich for b-fast.I'll never forget landing in Vegas in the 100 degree heat! Now only DL operates the 727 (into ROC 'til 3-31). Will NW 727's in charter service continue? I know the Indiana Pacers use a NW727 with a special interior.

I only had the chance to fly on 3 NWA 727's, and each flight was great. My last flight on the bird was in March, 2000 from MSY to MEM, totally full, post-mardi gras flight, but it was very enjoyable...just like all 727 flights were. A sad day indeed.  Sad

NWA is keeping 1/2 dozen 727's operational for a few more months as they are configured and set up for their sports charter business (many NBA basketball and some NHL hockey teams) to fulfill their sports contracts that run through this season.

Also I guess the PW power plants are being yanked on the mainline 727's that are being parked and they will see continued life as replacements on NWA DC-9's-- they use the same power plants--so NWA 727 parts may still be flying (on DC9's) around 2015-2018 when the last of the DC9's finally run out of cycles!! Douglas sure was smart building the DC9's with a 2 person cockpit instead of the 3 required for the 727!!

NWA estimates that out of their 169 strong DC9 fleet only about 20 will be out of cycles by 2007!! The remainder will run out of cycles between 2007 and somewherere around the mid to late 2010's!!

Here in Minnesota on the news, they had coverage on the last 727 flight. It was great, showed the pilots at Denver doing the takeoff check, there was a large sign that said "Last 727 Flight", there was cake, etc. The showed inflight shots which had a beautiful sunset, and then there was a big crowd at the gate when they got off! It was very, very nice! I'll sure miss those 727s.

So, how many US Passenger Airlines still have the 727? Or is NWA the last? I think Delta still has theirs.

How sad, this plane is really a beauty and a treat to fly on. I had the privelege to walk around it and touch one that was chartered into SJC a week or so ago...the plane is gorgeous. I will truely miss them.

It's getting harder to fly on the 727s now in the US (where one's best chance is to get onto a 727 flight) as most are either retired or have been converted to freighters. It's a beautiful aircraft, with the large T-shaped tail & 3 rear-mounted engines. It was quite a change after the 707.

I passed through EWR this afternoon and saw a NW 727 parked next to B Terminal. I didn't expect to see one of them this far east again. She was probably trying to hide and avoid going to the desert!

She doesn't fly, but East Coast Aero Tech my school, is the proud owner of NWA's very first 727. She's been a great learning resource I have one more month working on her then I pass her on to another class. Still a beautiful a/c.

OK, I've got a question?. If they flew the last 727 flight, how come I saw a Northwest 727 loading passengers at the gate in Orlando on Friday, 10 DEC 2003 at round 10:00am?.
