Comments On Finnair

Tue Jan 07, 2003 7:47 pm

This topic is about Finnair's fleet, service, ground-service and everything you can imagine about Finland's flag carrier.

I have noticed a few finns here at airliners.net and i think we all are curious about how Finnair is doing nowadays and since you guys are all over the world I thought this would be interesting.

So feel free to comment anything you want, also about Helsinki-Vantaa airport.

This is a part of my personal survey so any comments are welcome.

Latest news is that PEK will get an extra flight a week (out 6, in 7) starting in June, which will make it a total of 6 flts a week.

Any news on the fleet? Is there a possibility that AY might purchase Airbus widebodies to eventually replace the MD-11's?

I had several flights with Finnair and it was always a great experience to be onboard of their planes. Finnair is my prefered airline in Europe. I think onboard services are even better then it was on Swissair....
One of the greatest aviation moments of my life was a winter landing in a snowy Kittlä back in Feb. 2002 on a MD-83.

Overall, I think Finnair are a good airline, mostly on-time, well maintained fleet and the FA's smile - occasionally :P

One of my greatest moments was on a AY D95 and MD83, with OH-LZA from here, flying with him was real cool, we went up to Rovaniemi for a day to meet a friend who showed us around the ATC center they have up there  Smile

Being a Finn, flying Finnair is rather inevitable for me, which, at times feels rather unfortunate, in terms of service, that is.

The Domestics, in my opinion have the worst service and the less friendly (cabin) crew.

The Scheduled Intra-Europe Flights are ok. The food is ok and the service is more friendly. Anyway, I think SAS has a warmer atmosphere in the cabin, the Cabin Crew members actually smile and their food is MUCH better. On top of that their seats are more comfortable.

The Charters are somewhere in between...

Can't comment too much on Intercontinental Flights as It's 5½ years since I flew a scheduled intercontinental leg with Finnair.

Finnair is going to receive a fifth MD-11 (reg. OH-LGE), bought from the 2nd hand-market soon, and according to their press releases they will replace them at the end of the decade. I would guess the Widebody Airbuses have a larger chance than the B777 due to commonality with the A320 Series. On the other hand, a survey made among Finnair's staff states that the B777 would be their preferred choice.

Finnair is amongst the best European airlines I have flown on. Only Swiss was better.

SAS does not even reach the top five of my list

Hahaa. Finnair...!

Maximum 4/10. Some bad experiences, attitudes and overall coldness. I have given a few highlights some time ago on these pages, but I don't want to search that message. In short:

- fighting drunk Russians throwing food around the cabin on HEL - JFK flight
- on another HEL - JFK flight some "foreign" guy throws a (bread) bun on me and somebody had eaten a piece of my desert pastry before it was served; this same flight (I think) was late for 3 hours because the flight was waiting for the connections from Russia (and the pax had to sit in the plane most of this time)
- on a HEL - NRT flight a spare crew was having an all-night party in almost empty business class (almost, I was there, and I wanted to sleep)
- on another flight, a non-rev. F/A was sitting beside me in economy - she was served a business class meal and the crew on duty spend most of the flight chatting some really annoying BS with her - while I was once again trying to sleep

Those were practically all of my Finnair flights (well, not really)! And you guessed it, also my last ones with them...

I have flewn AY on quit alot flights out of ARN to MAD, HEL etc and I will just give them an avrage grade. 4-5 / 10.
I really dont know why, but its just a feeling when sitting on a AY flight thats
- I know I will get to my destination safe and without problem - but there aint nothing more. Its just a feeling that I have and its hard to explain exactly what it is.

Yeah, I would agree with OH-LZA, SAS are much better than Finnair.
Have flown the following sectors on them

I have found them ok, but nothing special. I was dissapointed with their long-haul product from SIN-BKK-HEL. There was no meal choice in economy, pretty poor i thought. Also, most aspects of the flight were below par from what I would expect of a nordic airline. The other european flights were ok-good.

Happy Flying,

I've been flying Finnair quite a lot, both domestic and international. I think they are a disapointment with their old DC9's, and the meals have always been bad quality...

The MD11 and new airbus320 seems nice though, but I've always been cathing the DC9's !

Alitalia is the best in Europe in terms of service IMO, SAS is also quite good

I think Finnair's intra-Europe scheduled flights are a very solid product. It's an efficient, classy and calm experience and the food and wine have been very nice.

The charters are just that, charters.

Well, my experience with AY has been limited to one trip I took, back in 1995, on LED-HEL-LHR, then STN-HEL-LED. LED-HEL and HEL-LED were on D9S aircraft, HEL-LHR was an MD-83, and STN-HEL was an A-300, back when Finnair still had a couple of those.

The flights were excellent; check-in personnel were friendly and professional, all aircraft were spotlessly clean, the onboard service was great, with nice food and free alcohol, and I really enjoyed checking out Helsinki Vantaa on my layovers, although the one on the return flight was several hours. STN-HEL was a red-eye, leaving at around midnight, arriving HEL at about 6:00 am.

I have heard relatively good things about AY's transatlantic flights, and would not hesitate to fly with them again. Their fares into LED and SVO are usually quite reasonable, these being the likely destinations I would be flying to.

My experience is that Finnair is really good for the international flights, but the domestic flights are horrible. The DC9-51 is really comforatble, but the crews are unfriendly and you really can't eat the food (if you get something!). But to fly on a DC9-51 in Finnland is even under these circumstances a great experience  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Posted a trip report a few months back, to be honest found them typical of the European State Flag Carriers.

Flight outbound was OK, FA's fine and food OK. Nothing outstanding but only a nit picker could complain.

Return lots of fed up unhappy 50 year old FA's and Ground Staff, with make up and hair that might have suited them 30 years ago. Not welcoming service (made you feel an inconvenience as they gave out the food), seat uncomfortable, flight delayed and delay mishandled. Meat unidentifyable, generally everything from checkin onwards was crappy, not really bad, but crappy. Left a bitter after taste.

Frankly 4-5/10. Would fly them again, but with a choice would probably fly the competitor. Not a great advert for Finland. Be proud of Nokia! Sorry.

I flew them in October, HEL-LHR-HEL as part of a trip to the U.S. from Tallinn. Service was ok, nothing special. The most notable part is they gave a bottle of red wine on the meal tray with the meal service. I'm not saying that's good (I don't drink on flights), just different from what I'm used to.

HEL is ok, but I've only been in the non-Schengen part of the airport.

Have been flying AY on only three occasions, one of which was domestic, and find their service to on par with what to expect from the Nordic countries,i.e. nothing exceptional but efficient, comfortable, adequate.
One thing I registered on my first flight, though, was that drinks, including wine, was served from WHOLE bottles, not just the small miniatures usually seen. This was in 1988.
I saw Alitalia mentioned earlier in this thread.I flew them only once and was not all that impressed by neither food nor service. But being hard-core "italianophilo",I probably expected more than what I got! The wine was Italian, though, not many airlines serve them.My only other experience of Italian wine was on Tyrolean.

Well, let me say that Finnair is a great company to fly, and for me to have worked with. They give the best attention, and nothing is left out that you may need, well I am in JFK. I flew with Finnair in October to HEL, my first time in Finland, what really bothered me the most was the weather, it snowed, rained, cloudy everyday, but Finland has its great and bad seasons of the year, as any other country in the world, and that's nature. Having a tour of the airport was great and the Airbuses are awesome, since here in JFK we only see their big bird, the MD-11, it was nice to see something else for a change. Anyways, in my opinion, I will fly with Finnair to HEL again, and I don't have nothing bad to say about the company, but as an employee that I was and looking it in the point of view as a passenger Finnair, is one of the most advanced airlines in the world when it comes to technology and advancements, in which are good for the humanity. The MD-11 that they will receive this month, to serve for Helsinki Osaka service, will be another of Finnair routes as they still grow and develop. I think that they were into A340's bout then they stopped the talking and kept the MD-11, I would say that the B777 will be better, but here it's a debate on which is better for the company in terms of the maintenance and the money spent on these aircraft, but I know some time this decade they will decide something and will choose what's better for them, and in this and their developments of routes, I wish them the best, and to keep up the good service, and keep giving out surveys in the airport like they do, to get their service not only onboard but also on the ground better for the passengers, which are the ones that make the airline. Finally I am done for now, and if anyone here thinks I may have said something incorrect, please fell free to correct me, after all like people say, "we are human, and nobody is perfect".

As you work for them you are hardly objective now. If you read ALL of the above comments I think you would find Finnair are not the worlds greatest as you would like to believe. Nothing against you or Finnair, just my opinion from your post.

As one would expect, the Nordic airlines are clean, punctual, and maintained meticulously. And very safe. And Finnair is no exception. Those are the most important considerations in the choosing of any airline. For me, anyway. But don't expect French cuisine or any Geisha girls. Finland has a high suicide rate, and is not known for big smiles. (But you wouldn't smile either if the sun never rose, day after day, all winter long.)

But if I had to, I'd fly to HEL and back with Finnair.
