Your First Airline Flight

Tue Jan 07, 2003 9:04 pm

Do you remember your first flight on an airliner? Technically, I do not. My first flight was on a PANAM 707 frrom New York to Dakar, Senegal (to date, I believe PANAM was the only U.S. major to ever have scheduled service to Africa). I was only two years old at the time, so I don't remember it at all. My first memorable flight was four years later when we flew back to the States (Dakar to New York). By then, PANAM had transfered the service to a 747-100. I remember walking out to the aircraft. It was night time and as we walked around the nose of that giant and then up the steps to the door, I was totally amazed. That first experience made such an impression on me that I can remember that flight as if it were yesterday.

Summer of 1971, Stuttgart-Bruxelles-New York, on Sabena 747-100, as a very little kid, but remember it well, the visitor's area in Stuttgart was full of people who wanted to see that strange aircraft, that looked so different.

btw: Though I don't remember if the experience was a "bloody" one, I never flew Sabena again!
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

DUS-AGP-DUS in April 1981

I was 5 1/2 years old at that time and surprisingly enough I can still remember the huge red-white plane, the yellow/green/light brown seats and that we landed northbound (over the Mediterranean) and took off southbound (again, over the sea). I had a window seat on the left side on the DUS-AGP leg and an aisle seat (20C or so) on the return.

Supposedly I was a little frightened at first (according to my parents), but became comfortable very soon and totally enjoyed the rest of the trip.

My first flight was from Dublin to Jersey on an Aer Llingus 737-200 EI BCR in August 1983. I was so excited and it was back then that I fell in love with aviation.

My first flight was Winter '77-'78, I was 2 or 3 and my parents were taking me and my brother to Disney World. We lived on Staten Island NY at the time and the day we left was during one of the biggest snowstorms NYC had seen.

We flew from Newark to Orlando on Eastern via a stop in Atlanta, we didn't have to get off though because it was a direct flight. Almost positive it was either a L-1011 or A-300.

My first Airline flight was back in the late 1960's (around 1967 or 1968).
It was from Luton to Tarbes (in Southern France) on board a Britannia Airways Britannia 102.

Fist flight EVER was Eastern Airlines from New Orleans to Houston and back, both 727-200's, in 1979.

First flight I can remember is a trip from New Orleans to Orlando on Delta Airlines in 1984. We had a 727-200 from MSY, then a 737-200 on the way back.

Swissair MD-81 from Zurich to Madrid in 1992. Funny day, first the engine of our train to the airport broke down and we arrived at the airport at the last moment. Then, the radar system of the airport broke down and we had to wait for almost two hours in the plane before it could finally take off.

August, 1980. UA 727 ORD-ONT-ORD. I was nine years old, had the window seat on the right side of the plane on both legs. I distinctly remember the gate we left from at ORD. Although I don't know the gate number, when I pass through ORD I know exactly where it is. Think it's part of AA now. It's the terminal shaped like a "Y."

My first was in August 1982, when I was 3 weeks old. I flew with my parents on a United DC10-10 from Chicago to Los Angeles. I have pictures, we rode in first class.

BTW, United's old ORD terminal was Y shaped, but that was torn down in the mid 80s when the new "Terminal of Tomorrow" was built (the current terminal 1).

Sure do. It was on a Britannia 757-200 when I took my first holiday at the age of 5. Don't have the registration though. I flew from East Midlands to somewhere in Greece.

American Airlines, Fokker 100, DFW to Kansas City, August 1995 (age 19). Right side window, exit row. I remember being so surprised that Fokker was still making planes; the only other time I had heard of them before was the Red Baron's WWI triplane. The return flight was a Super 80 (of course).

My first commercial airline flight was in the winter of 1983. I was two years old and was flying from Columbus to San Jaun through New York JFK to visit family with my parents. We flew on TWA, however I'm not sure of the aircraft I flew in, given i was only a toddler. Though my guess is a 727-100 or -200 from CMH to JFK, and an L-1011 from JFK to SJU.

I flew many times before I can remember, between 1986 and 1990. Many from Amsterdam to various parts of the UK (MAN, LBA were the most frequent). Also to Portugal in 1989 from MAN via AMS and LIS.

My first memorable flight was in 1994 when I flew to Portugal again, but this time direct from BRS to FAO. One of the best flights I ever had, and on Air 2000 of all airlines! Just glad i didn't fly on airtours  Big grin.

1965. I was five years old. Continental Airlines (most likely a DC-9-10) from ABQ-DEN connecting to Western Airlines (707 or 720 [I remember engines on the wings]) from DEN-MSP.

My love for flight began that day.

My first flight was in April 1998, I was 16 then, a KLM flight AMS-MMX on a Fokker 50. It was a so called 'Dagvlugje', a fun-flight. KLM doesn't sell it anymore, which is a shame! Anyone knows why?

I stayed in Sweden for 25 minutes and went back with the same a/c. In fact, I didn't even get off the plane, they handed me my boarding pass inside, because of the bad weather conditions!

My first flight was on a United 747-100 ORD-LAS. I don't remember much cause I was about 5 when this happened. I eventually got a chance to see the cockpit of the 747 and as well as getting some wings of my first flight too.

I never really had a memorable flight but I always liked flying anyway and I still do now!

My first flight was on Eastern. It was a one-stop from 727 PHL to YUL via EWR in July of 1967. I was 19 and decided with a friend that a one-day trip to see Expo 67 in Montreal might be fun (student airfares were dirt cheap back then).

The flight from PHL to EWR was great. However, the real event came on the second leg of that flight. Heading for Montreal, we aborted take-off at speed at EWR. I had no idea what was going on except I was certain that rapid deceleration on take-off was not normal. Seems there was a problem of an unspecified nature with the #2 engine. Back to the gate, and everyone off. About 5 mechanics, one really tall stepladder, and 90 minutes later, we tried it again, this time successfully. An hour and a half of our already hectic day was lost at EWR, but it certainly was a memorable flight.

Over 35 years, and 331 flights since (yes, I have logged every one), I have never had another aborted take-off abort, and am very happy to keep that streak alive.

My first flight was with Mandala Airlines, Vickers Viscount, from Jakarta (CGK) to Semarang (SRG), in June 1987. Nothing much that I can remember, but I do recall walking on the tarmac of Terminal 1C in CGK (no jetways on 1C at that time), walking in front of the 2 RR engines with big props and boarding through the front door. And I do remember that they were giving each passengers a pack of cigarettes, even to a 9 yrs old kid like me (Well, my aunt let me keep it, as long as I didn't lit it... Big grin)

I can vaguely remember flying by myself from SHV to IAH on Continental, in like 83 or 84.

My parents may have taken me on planes before that but I don't remember...

I remember tons of DL 727s from MLU and SHV, I remember going to DisneyLand on an L-1011 and Disney World on a 762.

N
