Southwest To Add 40 Flights A Day...

Wed Jan 08, 2003 8:43 am

...from New Orleans in the near future. This is possible due to the recent acquisition of Continental's former gates on the B concourse at MSY. Once the new jetways are up and running, they will have 11 gates, up from the current 7 that they use now.

Also as a side note, American will add an additional nonstop from MSY to LGA in the near future, as their current nonstop is doing VERY well.

All of the above info came from a worker at the airport, thus there have been no press releases as of yet.  Smile

What good news for New Orleans. They probably won't add those flights all at once, though, that's a big jump.

The foundations are being laid for the new Southwest concourse A at BWI, and the airport has closed and is tearing down the old A concourse-stub to make room. From the drawings, it looks like the extension will add about 20 gates for Southwest. It'll be interesting to see how Southwest uses them. I'm hoping they'll fill in some gaps in their East Coast network, especially ROC. There will probably be a lot more transcons too.

Whatever happened with Southwest's new 24 gate concourse at HOU? Originally, it was to have opened in October of 2002, but I never heard a revised opening date or any further updates.

Also, how's the work on Southwest's new gates at MDW coming along?

I recently heard that Southwest will begin service from the new concourse at HOU within a few weeks. The jetways are in place.

Look for more flights to/from FLL soon. With them moveing to Concorse B they go from 4 to 9 gates.

Sounds like they are adding gates everywhere.

MCI is going to 12 or 14 from the currant 8.

If they stay true to thier strategy and dont add any new destinations the next few years I can see them needing all the gates with all the new a/c to be delivered.

Now, if only WN would start ALB-MDW and FLL non-stops soon!

Southwest is doing a little cutting too. Wasn't STL-IND cut last year? Maybe AA is giving WN a little more of run for their money than TWA could.

Southwest reduces nonstop flights to seven cities

Southwest Airlines will reduce the number of nonstop flights it offers to seven cities from Lambert Field.

Effective April 7, Southwest will offer one less daily nonstop flight each to Chicago, Cleveland, Houston, Kansas City and Tulsa, Okla., and two less nonstop flights to Detroit, said Brandy King, a spokeswoman for the airline.

She said low demand for service to the six cities from St. Louis is the primary reason for the reduction.

"We are seeing the effects of the economy since 9-11," King said. "It's not the sole factor, but a contributing factor. The demand is not there to continue the frequencies."

Considering that Southwest was the only airline that didn't cut any employees after 9/11, and didn't slash capacity, it's amazing that even they haven't had more reductions than this since then. Also, AA brings a far more powerful FF program to the STL hub than TWA had, and I'll bet they're aggressively matching fares. AA plays tough. If anything, this might be a sign that AA intends to stick with STL.

LoneStarMike--there's a new aerial photo of MDW in the database; the new concourse is all closed in, but how close to completion it is I don't know. It looks like the shorter new southern concourse is open, there are a/c around its gates. Whitish a/c and some are long (prob 757's); I'd say ATA.

I really wish WN would add some cities to make it convenient for me to fly again, such as MSP and DEN.

Construction of MDW Concourse B where SWA will be housed is nearing completion. I flew into MDW a couple of weeks ago and saw the building firsthand. The only thing that needs to be added are the jetways. Concourses A (used by ATA), part of B (3 gates have been open and are used by NW and ATA) and C (DL, AA, CO, F9) are already in use. I believe A will be extended further once Southwest moves to their new gates and the rest of the old terminal is demolished.

The new Southwest gates at Midway should open sometime within the next few months. Structurally, the building is complete, but the interior still has quite a ways to go. There will be 10 gates initially, which means that Southwest will probably retain some of its gates on the old concourse. Eventually that will be pulled down, and the remaining 9 gates can be installed.

As for Houston Hobby, construction on the terminal addition seems to be proceeding at a snail's pace. I flew through HOU last September and the addition looked basically complete - there were even about seven jetways installed. Four months later, it's still not open. The Houston Airport System website is one of the worst airport websites I've ever seen and provides absolutely no information, so who knows when the building will open.

I wonder if congestion is one of the reasons for the SWA reduction at STL. Maybe they had a vision of TWA going under and wanted to position them selves in STL to take up the market when it happened, thinking that no one would buy them because they were in such bad shape.

Getting back to the congestion thing. If these routes are maybe just breaking even or loosing money and suffer some delays due to congestion at STL then its a good thing the are cut. After all, one of the major points to SWA business strategy is the quick turn at an uncongested airport.
