from what I've read, the Chinese gov't did not want to let
EVA Air to be the first to fly.... as you know EVA Air's boss
is a supporter of Taiwan's pro-independence President...
On the other hand, China Airlines is seen as more
Taiwan's government insisted on landing in Hong Kong
so the flight won't be nonstop from mainland China to
Taiwan... the "official" reason was for national security...
Did they forget the fact the Hong Kong is part of the
People's Republic and the PLA troops are stationed only
a short drive away from HKIA?
This will not be the first time a China Airilnes plane has
flown to China... remember the 747F that was hijacked
and landed in China... That CI captain decided to defect
to China and what better way than flying his own 747F?
