Qatar Airways Changes To BKK/MNL/KUL/CGK

Thu Jan 09, 2003 1:43 am

Starting in April 1 2003 the following changes should take place to QR's services to BKK, MNL, KUL and CGK.

- Manila will be seperated from Bangkok and will instead operate 5x weekly non-stop from Doha using the new 2-class A330-200. This move will save QR lots of money since they don't have rights to sell tickets between BKK and MNL.

- Bangkok flight timings have changed to offer better connection possabilities with European destinations. Flights to operate 5x weekly DOH-BKK-DOH and twice weekly DOH-BKK-KUL-BKK-DOH with 5th freedom rights. Additional flights to BKK are highly likely.

- Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta are finally going to 9x weekly and daily respectively and the changes have been uploaded to the reservation system at last so there shouldn't be any worry of the repeat of last December's problems.

Airbus Lover,

I honestly have no Idea of when the second 2-class aircraft will be delivered because I haven't go info on the newly leased one. AFAIK the other two A330-200's due from Airbus this year will have a 3-class lay out but I have no info on the leased one.

If the leased A330-200 is a two class aircraft then you will see it either to BKK or KUL/CGK before the end of the year.

BTW I have a question for the MH fans (including you of course Airbus Lover). As you know MH codeshare's on QR's flights but they only offer First and Business class under their flight code and not economy. Anybody know why?

Thanks for the update Qatarairways!

good to hear about the enhancements of the fareast schedule of QR.
What is their main biz. to and from CGK? fireign workers in Qatar or transit pax from/to Europe? CGK is a good market but also very price sensetive.

Swissgabe there are currently to QR flights to KUL that operate via BKK. It departs BKK at around 7-8pm and then fly back at around 1am the next day.

QatarAirways:

I am not too sure why MH only code share on QR's First and Business only. But maybe it could be that QR doesnt have enough Y seats to actually sell to MH for code share since they probably can fill up those seats quite easily? and that I kno QR does quite a lot of tour packages and marketing in Malaysia for flights to Doha on economy then to some Gulf states. Then again, maybe MH finds that its more of their F or C class passengers that are interested in travelling to Doha or to connect onto other MEastern cities but I could be wrong I have no solid answer to your question. I am sorry. Maybe I don't deserve to be called a MAS fan huh?  Big grin

Actually Qatar, I have just checked. It is a wrong that MH only code share on F and C class. They code share on all 3 classes to Doha (non-stop flights) and as far as I kno, they dont code share on those flights that go via BKK. Hope this is a bit more informative.

Qatar plans 9 flights a week to KUL - 2 via BKK and 7 which will operate on to CGK. All flights will depart KUL late at night/early mornings. Flights from Doha will arrive KUL in mornings on way to CGK but second flight of day (twice weekly) will arrive via BKK in evenings.

Amir,
The KUL and CGK flights are timed to offer convenient connections to the Gulf and so cater to tourism (KUL) and the labour market (CGK). As you said CGK is price sensitive, MNL is as well. In fact the later has the cheapest tickets in a $ per KM basis, as well as having low bookings in business class but the "saving grace" of MNL is that it has a high number of O&D passengers between Doha and MNL which means QR don't need low-yeild connections from Europe.

Many of the Indonesians in Qatar are engineers and technicians in the Petroleum industry and so travel quite often and many choose business class.

Airbus Lover,

Thanks for the correction.

Thks QR

concerning MNL and CGK. This means that QR's share of point of Sales MNL and CGK on the flights is quite high? i.e. tickets are mainly sold outside of Qatar.
What about Surabaya, would it be an alternative for QR? there are only few airlines that serve this city which is the industry heart of Indonesia thus a potential high yield market. Or do they have interlines with some Indonesian carriers in place?

Amir,

I never heard of Surabaya being mentioned as a possible QR destination. QR strategy in Asia is to serve niche markets such as China, Vietnam and Nepal which have low competition and high yeilds so Surabaya fits in with the strategy but I personally have never heard it mentioned. Besides QR only have access to DPS and CGK in Indonesia.

On the issue of Interlines, I am not so sure about Indonesia. I will get back to you on that tommorow but QR cooperates extensively with MH to the Far East and Asia.

At the moment, interlining in Indonesia is only realistically possible with Garuda. Few airlines have the infrastructure to enable that.

As with Surabaya, the only airlines that give realistic European connections are SQ, MH and GA (and that doesn't exist at the moment). Not sure about CX's connections from the Surabaya flights. The thing about Surabaya is that the market is more East Asian oriented than Jakarta. To see how big the west bound market from Surabaya, check SQ's stats  Smile

Damn, I was hoping to get QR A332 service here soon! I have to wait I guess...
