Question About Vapor Seen Trailing From C172

Thu Jan 09, 2003 8:13 am

At about 6PM today, I saw an overflying C172/C152 (not sure which) trailing a stream of vapor about (i'm guessing here) 3 feet wide. I was beginning to think that it may be fuel, but I am not sure if cessnas can dump fuel. If anyone could assist me with any furhter info regarding this sighting, that would be great. Thanks in advance! Smile

I also saw a Cessna 172 trailing a "vapor"a few months ago. I think the most likely thing is that the fuel cap came off and the air flowing over the fuel tank opening siphons the fuel out and into the air.

Or maybe it was a steam powered cessna, who knows  Smile  Nuts

Well they actually CAN dump fuel - in case you forget to close the over-wing fuel ports - overwing low pressure can suck out 26 gallons of fuel in a couple of minutes!

What you saw was probably excess fuel dripping out of the fuel tank vent (that happens when the tanks are 100% full and the spray-effect can be quite spectacular when at full engine RPM). I witnessed one situation when the tower called a departing cessna to check their fuel ports as they were obviously 'leaking' fuel... but it turned out it was just the excess fuel dripping out.

You have to watch those overflow tubes when doing you walkaround too...it sucks to reek of 100LL after getting dripped on. Not that this ever happened to me of course.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
