Air Berlin Looking At Airbus

Fri Jan 10, 2003 4:57 am

The current ATW reports that Air Berlin is unhappy with Boeing. When they asked about an offer to replace their last 737-400s with more -800s, They "were not satisfied with the Boeing attitude on pricing". The airline now intends to ask Airbus for an offer of at least 20 319/320.

Mmmh. I guess the Ryanair price will haunt Boeing forever - however low it must have been...

Prices are sticky...I wonder if Airbus will any similar pressure because of EasyJet.

N79969: Sure.... The question is, will either Airbus or Boeing be stupid enough to let themselves be driven into a corner by continuing to effectively dump their products. I think they won't - not if the economic climate recovers. If it gets worse in the airline industry, then they might have no other choice....

Now, Air Berlin wants 20 planes, nothing compared with the 100 + 50 options of Ryanair or 120 + 120 options of Easyjet.

Question is, what'll happen when Virgin Blue goes shopping in earnest? My bet is they are the next ones to try and go for a ridiculously ambitious order. Boeing, or an Easyjet-alike switch to Airbus? Any bets?

Virgin Blue will and probably already have selected Boeing. There is much speculation that they have ordered 11 737-700s and 10 737-800s listed as undisclosed on Boeing's December orders.
Airbus have admitted to no correspondence from Virgin Blue since they placed their tender in mid-2002.
You'll just have to take my word on this one.

Dale.

11 and 10? Sounds unusually sane for a low-cost airline these days!
