What State Has Most Commercial Airports?

Fri Jan 10, 2003 8:23 am

My guess would either be Florida or California- state with most commercial airports with scheduled service.

We need to update your NY list:
Ithica just lost service, Plattsburgh has none, I'm unaware of Saranac Lake even having an airport, Watertown South Dakota has commerical service, but not the one in the Empire state, I don't know where Messena is but they have no airport, Poughkipsee lost its serive, West Hampton also has none, where is Ogdensburg? Niagra Falls is likewise devoid of commerical service.
In PA, your all good though.

Seems to me this was asked within the past month or so. I think Alaska was voted the state with most commercial airports (with mainline flights).

Texas is either #2 or #3 behind California and Florida I would guess.

Abilene, Amarillo, Austin, Beaumont, Brownsville, Brownwood?, College Station, Corpus Christi, Dallas Love Field, Dallas-Fort Worth, El Paso, Ft. Worth Alliance, Houston Ellington, Houston George Bush Intercontinental, Houston George Bush Intercontinental, Longview, Lubbock, Midland-Odessa, San Angelo, San Antonio, Texarkana, Tyler, Waco

Let me know if there are any I should add or subtract.

Regarding NY, check out the US Airways destination map: http://www.usairways.com/travel/maps/route/us_east_coast.htm

They used to serve PLB (Plattsburgh) and SLK (Saranac Lake) as well, but no longer appear to.

Alaska is up there. Mostly because allot of places that would not have gotten service otherwise get it in Alaska because of isolation and road conditions.
If we were counting most commercial airports per unit of population, Alaska would easily win hands down.

CMK10,

For someone who lives in NY State you sure don't know much about it, West Hampton and Niagra have had commercial air service in the past 9 years so I added them to the list.

As for the others,

More about NY State,

Watertown NY is near the border with Quebec, it's the home of Fort Drum. Which hosts the famous US Army's 10th Mountain Divison who are some of the first troops into Afghanistan and soon Iraq. Former Senator Bob Dole fought with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy during WWII, the bravery of it's members is well documented.

Massena is also along NY's Northern border, a friend of mine from College lives in Massena.

Niagra falls has had on and off commercial air service, always to EWR. First was this carrier with 727s in the '80s, later on was another carrier who flew CVRs. I believe KIWI also flew between Niagra Falls and EWR for a couple years.

Several people have mentioned California but no one has given the number. So there are currently 29 airports with scheduled service in California -
ACV - Eureka/Arcata
BFL - Bakersfield
CIC - Chico
BUR - Burbank
CEC- Crescent City
CLD- Carlsbad
FAT - Fresno
IPL - El Centro/Imperial
IYK - Inyokern
LAX - Los Angeles
LGB - Long Beach
MCD - Merced
MOD - Modesto
MRY - Monterey
OAK - Oakland
ONT - Ontario
OXR - Oxnard
PSP - Palm Springs
RDD - Redding
SAN - San Diego
SBA - Santa Barbara
SBP - San Luis Obispo
SCK - Stockton
SFO - San Francisco
SJC - San Jose
SMF - Sacramento
SMX - Santa Maria
SNA - Orange County
VIS - Visalia
I can think of at least 5 others that have lost service in the last 5 years that are currently recruiting airlines.

STT757, I know about Watertown, its the terminus of Interstate-81, and I checked the United States OAG and they don't have any service to the airports you listed, im sorry I was wrong about two of them.

Just running down the list of destinations from Fairbanks and Anchorage in the 11/02 OAG I count 63 Alaska airports.

For Texas, add McAllen (MFE) and Harlingen (HRL), which both get mainline jet flights, as well as Killeen (ILE), Victoria (VCT), and Wichita Falls (SPS). Texarkana's airport is actually in Arkansas and will soon lose scheduled airline service. I don't think AFW (Alliance) has schedlued passenger service. Galveston (GLS) had service in the past.
