JAL And The MD-90's

Fri Jan 10, 2003 2:41 pm

Has JAL decided what they are going to do with the MD-90s they inherited from JAS.

I don't know much about this...but I think they will not stay for long in JAL's fleet....together with the MD-80's! JAL will decide between thd A32X and the 737NG....perhaps they could add a small number of 717's or Embraer 170/190, who knows....

The MD-90 is probably ideal for the short haul routes that they operate on. Other than fleet rationalization, there is no need to retire the MD-90 fleet.

The higher ownership costs of the NG/32X would not be covered by any operational savings over the MD-90.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

JAL has already announced a decision to look for a single widebody type to replace its existing widebodies: the A32X -v- 737. Now, given that (apart from the A300s, which will be staying, the -600Rs only) JAL only operates Boeings and that the 737NG has a lot of cockpit similarity with the 777, I think you can guess which way this will go.

ANA has a similar proposal and while it currently operates A32Xs, it also has a mostly Boeing fleet.

So, to answer your question, I think JAL will clear the decks entirely: dump its 737-400s as well as JAS's MD81, 87 and 90 fleets and focus on a fleet of 737-7/8/900 (the latter could replace the 767-200s, as well as being more efficient than 763s on some routes).

Pardon me my ignorance. Is there a recent JAL/JAS merger or takeover ? Can't find anything anywhere about it.
