Which To Choose NZ744 Or UA777 LAX-LHR

Sun Jan 12, 2003 3:00 am

Hello,

I am going to fly LAX-LHR late february. I have looked at the schedules and am not sure what to choose - 777 with UA or or 744 with NZ. Any ideas, and what's Your favourite seat (business class) on the two?
Does anybody know which version of the 777 UA uses on that route, and on the SFO-FRA route? Is it what seatguru.com calls International A, B or C?

I'd definitely go with Air New Zealand on this flight. They have excellent service and are always make it into the top 10 in surveys. I always fly ANZ to the South Pacific and Australia when I can.

Have to agree and say ANZ. Choose upper deck last row before exit doors as the seats seem to recline further. I always fly ANZ from LHR to SYD and pay business class fare simply because it it SO worth it.

I'd take NZ, just because it's something new.

Why not British Airways? I can highly recommend them to you, especially when you will fly in Business Class. Two weeks ago I flew EWR-LHR in Club World and I was very impressed about the full flat seats, the delicious food and the friendly service.

Go with United - they need all the money the can get at this moment in time.
But, if you don't like United, go with British Airways!

Air New Zealand all the way. The crew is excellent, always smiling and making your flight a smooth one.

If you go with United, make sure to have a good meal beforehand.

As it's an overnight flight, in J i'd go UA - better seats and a lot more space. In Y, definitely NZ for the same reasons. Not much point worrying about "service" if all you want to do is be comfortable and try to sleep. Can't see if a FA is smiling or not from under closed eyelids!
Cheers.

I'd choose UA... they could really use the help, and the improved C class is very nice.

Never think about those choices coz I know I always go with United...but this is leaning towards a NZ vs UA vs BA....war again.....I see if you are only paying 300-400 bucks for Y, then really doesn't matter much, for the goodwill towards UA, I suggested you can try, but for them, fares are too low and may not even make anything....but for C, I can assured you United 777 is state of the art, a piece of gem! If you like to have fun, try 1 stop on European carrier out of LAX, sadly not many left, AF, KLM, Swiss, DLH... don't know if SU do connect flights in SVO. To Paris Air Tahiti Nui seems have a good deal

Totally go with Air New Zealand!!! They are a very classy airline and have great service. I also notice that they always leave LAX on time too, with no wait taxiing or taking off. I flew them LAX-SYD and they were really good. Good food and nice seats!
My posts/replies are strictly my opinion and not that of any company, organization, or Southwest Airlines.

I would totally go with UAL, if you are going "c" class then UNITED.
I wouldn't take NZ over UNITED ever. If you don't like UAL at least fly BA. If you get "Y" on the 777 then you get a PTV. N178UA said it best. Give the business to UAL.

Ok I'm a diehard UA lover. But I do have one complaint about C class on UA, which I know NZ can't beat so it doesn't matter.

PTVs. My privates are bigger than the PTVs on UA... and I've seen a lot of pictures lately (of PTVs, not privates) that are much much larger even in Coach.

That aside, NZ's and BA's aren't any better. So stick with UA.

Jox - as an NZ employee I am obviously biased, so will not offer an opinion as to which carrier you choose.

However, I suggest you take a look at http://www.epinions.com and search for 'Air New Zealand' and 'United Airlines'. It's a site where (mostly) regular members of the public write opinions on products and services they've sampled, and you'll find opinions slightly less biased than those of the die-hard airline supporters here!

It depends what you are going for!!!

AirNewZealand...
I hear the seats are very comfortable compared to many modern day seats, with lots of leg room!! The problem is, all functions are manually and not electronic, as i think UA has!
If you are selecteing on food, beverages, service...Then Air New Zealand will win hands down!!

United Airlines...
They reeally need your help right now! Even though i am also a person who enjoys NZ over UA. United seems to have a better 'product' in terms of innovation etc.... but i have never travelled UA in C so i cannot comment furthur!

Good Luck, and let us in on your decision!

Cheers

Well, I don't know if You have made my decision easier  Wink/being sarcastic  Confused . The information on epinons was very interesting to read, though.

I liked the following comment (about NZ 744): "On the 747 pilot front views and ground views are available on the in-seat video in addition to the flight-nav info". That sounds interesting - while I like United's "pilot talk" on channel 9 very much, it must be even better to *see* their view! Are that "show" available even on taxi, takeoff etc?

On the other hand, many of You have recommended UA and the 777, and I agree that my previous experiences with both UA and the 777 is very good! If I haven't stumbled upon the NZ alternative, I guess that I just had chosen that without thinking...

BTW - Does anybody know of a web page that shows NZ:s seat plan for the upper deck - showing were the windows are. The one on their website http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/travelinfo/ontheplane/seating/boeing_747_400.htm just shows the seating arrangement  Sad .

I'll also do some price investigation later, some of the comments indicate that NZ is much more expensive.

Air New Zealand economy is really not that good. The seats are hard, the leg room is limited, and the service is not really anything to brag about. United's economy class is nothing stellar either, but I'd fly United. Give them the business. They need it.
