Losing A Paper Ticket

I was always wondering about this thing concerned with paper tickets.
Why is it that if you lose your paper ticket you will have to pay a fee, and purchace a new ticket and then get re imbursed after a while. when they book a paper ticket for you, don't they have the information on the computer already? can some one explain?

Lose the paper? yer screwed. That is why most major airlines have E-TKTS. Don't ever go with paper, the downside is that if you switch to two different carriers not in an alliance together you get paper tkts. They need the info and the paper for accounting purposes, the reservation isn't booked with the info needed to replace a tkt all the time. As a csr on the other side of the counter you cost us so much time trying to play detective to solve your problem. Yes it is our job, but I would be willing to bet a lost ticket takes on average 30 minutes or more and thats if you get an agent who knows what the heck their doing, if not? Then you get the help desk and a migraine from staring at the logo on the wall behind the agent for an hour.

To reissue a lost ticket, the airline needs the following information.

Passenger Name
Ticket Number
Date of Issue
Office/IATA Number of Issuing Agent
City of Issue
Fare Basis
Form of Payment
Fare Construction (including tax breakdown)

In an airlines CRS, bookings made through agents, other airlines, etc, will typically only display the first 2 - hence the lengthy process in reissuing a ticket.
