Sunworld Airlines History

Tue Jan 14, 2003 4:51 am

Anybody out there remember the history of Sunword Airlines? They operated in the early to mid-80's, and I believe their base was at LAS.

They operated the #1 DC-9 for a time:

, and had a fleet of DC-9's, 146's, and 733's.

I'd be interested in cities served, and routes, and opeating dates.

Photos in the database show Sunworld's aircraft (mostly DC-9s) at TUS, LAS, and ONT. I remember that they served SAN as well, but I don't think it was for very long; perhaps less than a year. I'd like to see a photo of one of their 737s, there aren't any yet on airliners.

Prinair,

The email came in fine. Thanks for the info!!!

For those interested, it was an airline based in LAS, created in 1981, and went out of business in 1988.

Hmm, Sunworld was flying into MCI just last year. They pulled the service later in the year.

there are two different sunworlds. There is the 80s one and the recent one. Scheduled flights have been pulled, IIRC, and just charters are being done.

I saw a few of their 727s parked at Tucson before. They are not up on blocks.

Tom, took me a while to get signed up with Airliners.net, but here I am, and I wanted to reply especially to this topic. From my million boxes of old timetables from when I was young and ran around the west coast airports, I found two timetables on Sunworld Airlines. The May 1987 timetable shows Sunworld based in Las Vegas, and operaed DC-9's on the following routes: LAS-OKC-TUL, LAS-SAN, LAS-ONT, LAS-SJC, and even ONT-SJC. Later that year, Sunworld went on a growth spurt and added 737-300's, and tried to compete with the upcoming new America West hub in Vegas at the time, but Sunworld lost. They revamped, and moved their base to Reno, at which the October timetable I have from them in 1987 shows the following routes: LAS-OKC-TUL, LAS-RNO, RNO-BOI, RNO-GEG, RNO-SEA, RNO-PDX, PDX-SEA, RNO-ONT, RNO-SAN, and RNO-BUR. On flights over an hour they offered what they show on the timetable as FB's, a fun basket filled with a sandwich, chips, fruit, and a candy bar. I don't have here with me in Arizona, but back home in L.A., I have a collection of Sunworld items that I received free by writing them when they were based in Las Vegas, and they sent me, i.e., 8 1/2 by 11 photos of their aircraft, flying cards, pens, pads of paper, and other logo items, amazingly all free just for writing them. I also just remembered now that they also flew LAS-TUS, and then added TUS-SAN later on. If you still have that email with the info you received, it'd be great to get, thanks.

Robert,

Email me at thomasmoore@prodigy.net, and I'll pass along the page that was sent to me. Thanks for the info you posted above.

From your profile, it seems we may have some things in common (SoCal, and E-RAU). I'll talk to you separately on that.
