South American Airport Expansions

Tue Jan 14, 2003 7:41 am

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has more information on which airports in South America are planning to expand (new terminals/runways) or which airport are already in the process of expanding or have recently finished the construction of a new terminal or runway. All I know is that either Sao Paolo or Rio de Janeiro (or both) is (are) building a new terminal. Venezuela is expanding the current international terminal, right? Santiago de CHile already has a relatively new terminal (any expansion there?). What about the other airports, such as Bogota, Medellin, Cali, Barranquilla? Are these airports expanding? I have never seen photo's in which these airports can be seen nicely (such as good aerial views). How about Montevideo and Asuncion? I have no idea how big these airports are and only know that Pluna is operating its first Boeing 767-300ER, is the aviation business doing well for Pluna? Am I missing out on some airports here?

Dag,

In the past three years there has been quite a lot of change in privatized Argentine airports (Ezeiza and Aeroparque in Buenos Aires, Usuahia, Calafate, Bariloche). I recommend to take a look to a dedicated site with plenty of photographs and data on them:

www.aeropuertosarg.com.ar

In Argentina, Cordoba (second largest city) was pursuing the construction of a new terminal. But I dont know the current status given the terrible economic situation that the country is. The terminal was supposed to be at least twice the size of the existing one.

Montevideo is a very small airport and there has been a long debate over its privatization. The terminal looks very outdated.

Best regards,

Lima

Lima, Peru (LIM) will be getting a major makeover, the proposed terminal looks great. Take a look at www.lap.com.pe and maybe do a search on google, I think you will be surprised.

I recently went to Argentina, and AeropuertosArgentina 2000 is the private company that is remodeling/expanding the airports and is doing a great job. Both airports in Buenos Aires (Ezeiza and Aeroparque) look great, especially Aeroparque. And even when I flew to the small town of Iguazú, which had all of two jetways, the airport was modern but also retained some of its older flavor.
