I thought they ordered 8 A345s? Man, they've ordered so many aircraft that it's really confusing!!

Gigneil,

It wasn't a firm order, only an LOI for an extended range A340-600. AFAIK, the LOI supposedly expired on December 31st 2002.

BTW, as Hkg82 said, the A340-500s are firm orders.

Teahan is right, Emirates never signed a firm contract for the A340-600, just an LOI for 8. They do have 6 firm -500s on order though.

Am I the only person who's skeptical about Emirates's business plan?

They seem to want to make their country a main Asia-Europe hub, since there is no way Arabian peninsula traffic could support all the A380's they are ordering (and 777's also, I believe). They are betting against the growth of point to point traffic, and they are betting against regional hubs in places like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Many of these Asian hubs do still have allot of growth potential. When the European hubs run out of capacity, who's to say people wont just fly direct or change planes in Asia? The traffic Emirites is going for with this huge growth plan doesnt exist yet and even if it does grow to its full potential, there will be plenty of competition.

As a European or Asian businessman what sounds more exiting to you - Thailand or the UAE? Which is more stable, the Persian Gulf or Singapore? Where would you change planes?

Is this just an oil-subsidized, ego-boosting boondoggle or am I missing something?

Yes, quite right, I guess it was just an LOI.

Sorry.

since there is no way Arabian peninsula traffic could support all the A380's they are ordering (and 777's also, I believe).

Two things... first off; EK might have bought all those planes to get them at decent rates, then price-gouge the heck out of carriers who want them at a later date but cant get any off the production line in a decent time frame (read that: "Japanese carriers")

Secondly, we're looking at this from a depressed 2003 prespective... who's to say 10 years from now, the traffic in that region wont have doubled/tripled/quadrupled.... or, decreased?

emirates airlines did all these orders just few dates following 11th of september, maybe in less than 10 days following the tragedy. we were so scared of possibility of layovers, and then here we go, our chairman announced the deals with boeing and airbus!
