Spotting At YYZ Today 01/19/03 What A Wierd Day?

Mon Jan 20, 2003 1:00 pm

Ok, hello all YYZ spotters and GTAE'ers, i was out at YYZ today for a while with Marc and the Captian joined us for awhile.

For starters Air 200 was on the sked with 2 chartered flights so i had to go out and see them. I missed the first flight but i got the second....here is a run down of some interesting aircraft that came in today!!

BA 744 started off the day:

KLM 743 had the "just one click away" aircraft in!!

So far nothing unusual.....right.... but then.....this came on the scanner and into sights....

Then to even mess us up a little more Air France brought an unusual bird to YYZ....

Yes a 767....not an A330 which they used here last winter a 67??

Then we finally saw the Air 2000 757 arrive, the first one must have arrived on 24R...

So among other intersting aircraft that are normal to YYZ, these i just had to mention to you and I hope that you will join us next time the GTAE meets...you never know what is going to cross the fence?, oh and by the way, today was not an offical meeting....i just decided the last minute to go

Yeah, AF is bringing the 763 into YYZ from Jan 14 through Feb 23.

I was supposed to be on AF on this route later this month and was notified me about the equipment swap. Thankfully the trip was cancelled, because I hear horror stories about their 767s.

What were the EAL 742 and Air 2000 752's doing in YYZ today? Routings?

There was another EAL 742 came in later at around 21:10 at gate C-33. I believed the one you guys spotted was the one sitting at Gate C-30. As for AF, as far as I saw in the last couple of months, they usually flew A340 into YYZ and sometimes A330. Today, their 767 sat at C-32.

p.s. It was damn cold and windy out there today.

You are exactly right, they even said in the air "where are you parking" and they did say C-30 for the first one.

Neil, i know that the Air 2000 were charters from Newcastle and Brimingham.

EAL i have no clue whats going on there?????

I hadn't read anything about AF switching aircraft....the 67 looked realllllllllly dirty on the outside and i can imagine what it is on the inside. I bet those new A330's last year were a dream!!

The European 747 was a charter from Glasgow as it left glasgow over my house at 1900 UTC estimating YYZ at 0100 UTC so like 2000 local time toronto so that must have been the one, G-BDXF.

Thanks for the info! The GTAA site says the 2nd EAL 742 that arrived at 9pm ET was a charter from LGW.

I wonder what all these charters are for though?

I guess you could say we are gorilla's....we hang everywhere we can....?? But seriously, depending on the day, we like to mix up the locations....usually hang around the threshold of rwy 23, either at wendy's, or near there...??

Some times fedex, but more there in the summer when its warm. We are in the process of finding a new place to actually watch and not be bothered.

More info to come regarding the offical GTAE club.

Regarding the EAL, could it be a military charter? Last spring they did several military charters from England to YYC.

LOL Slawko! I actually did get hit by a fragment one day earlier in the summer... FedEx isn't great anymore thanks to the snowbank... But I think we should utilize T1 as much as possible before it's closed. It's very wierd to think that the view from there will be gone in less than a year.

A military charter is unlikely. Although it seems strange that 2 752's and 2 742's would arrive at YYZ within 24 hours. I was wondering whether AC or BA had a couple of mechanicals and they needed some lift....but this is also unlikely.

it would be even better if it was a YYZ farewell party

YYZ will never go away. Although it will continue to leave YUL behind.

I believe the EAL flights might have been inbound to pick up Canadian Hajj pilgrims. Don't have specific info on this though.

Neil, BA still had their flights on sked as usual that day...Marc and I saw the first one...as per the picture above...oh and Mark (flyyul) you have to admit when the new terminal is built....it will put YUL to shame....or what it will do is lead them to build a new Montreal airport that is actually going to get used!! And atleast they have an alternate if they close most of YUL down for Renovations!!

The 747s should be G-BDXF routing LGW-GLA-YYZ on EAF 4094 and G-BDXH routing MAN-YYZ on EAF 4096.

Just to remind everybody that the Pearson Airport Viewing Areas Petition is still alive and going strong. Although the GTAA have not committed to such a facility(s) we remain dedicated to our cause. Anybody and everybody who has not signed yet, is encouraged to do so. Just click the link below.

Do we actually thing that the GTAA will do anything....not that i am getting my hopes up, but it seems like if they do want to do anything the old boeing parking lot this is the time. People are bringing down the old Boeing building and there will be prime space avialable...people will pay to use the lot....why can't they figure that out...and even the GTAE would be happy to govern it!

Realistically, I doubt the GTAA will set up an official viewing spot.

Why should they? An official spotting location would require capital $ with no payback. From a business standpoint, a spotter site is a LOW priority. If I was on the GTAA BoD, I'd refuse to endorse spending any money for spotters.

IMHO.

Hey neil, what if it was a money making operation....you know how they do pay parking at schools....like a little coin operated gate...i mean it wouldn't be great, but I am sure with all of the people that are joining the GTAE, we could monitor the site....heck if they did something i would clean up garbage and if i saw anybody doing stuff like littering, i would tell them off.

I think if they gave us a little spot at the old boeing parking lot....it would be packed all of the time!! oh they are taking the building down....don't know whats happening to it....i hope they do something good with it....actually if there was room up at the north end, that would be great too...

The way i look at it, there is money to be made and on a security stand point, we would be great......i know there is a great wall to climb, I just hope i have friends to stand behind me and help me over the wall

Grant, in theory you are right, but it's really a no-go.

Any fee-paying site would need fencing, regular security visits/monitoring, cleaning, paving. The initial capital cost could easily be $500K. It will be hard to convince the BOD to re-allocate scarce capital funds from an existing capital-intensive airport for something as ephemeral as a spotters parking lot.

Although I love the idea of a spotters lot as much as anyone, the business side of me rules my opinion on this one! lol.

IMHO.

Hello,

YYZ717, I disagree with your last comment. Fencing costs? There's more fencing around YYZ then I'm sure there is most small communities. Regular security, then who are these clowns that already partrol the perimeter? Monitoring? Are you saying that the current armada of cameras located around the airport are just for show? Cleaning, this is one that I totally agree with you. I'm sure that was one of the biggest problems with the old Boeing lot. Numerous times the place was littered with garbage. I even spoke to the Boeing people who quite frankly, and honestly, turned it back to me and said "why should we have to incur the cost of cleaning up after others"? As for paving etc. I think the point of what kind of facility we're looking for is getting lost. I don't think we need anything elaborate? One of the best locations in the past was the area we called "the loop", where the south fire hall presently is. It was nothing more then a cul de sac. I personally was only chased out of there once and that was during the Gulf "Oil" war in 1991.

We had a meeting with the GTAA, they agreed such a facility(s) should exist. The problem is that nobody in the ivory tower on Convair Dr has the guts to sign their name on the dotted line and put the wheels in motion. Read the comments on our petition "comments" page. A lot of people are willing to fork out a few bucks to sit in an area that is designated for such activities. Would this make the GTAA rich? No! However how much revenue are the GTAA making on us currently??

In any case, I still encourage everyone to sign the petition. Giving up and throwing in the towel, guarantees nothing will happen! http://www.canairradio.com/petition.html

Cheers.

This is an interesting topic, and I tend to agree with Neil. There are so many projects that the GTAA is undertaking, the last thing on their mind is to create an area for spotters. Unless a really good business case could be made to the GTAA, nothing will ever come about. If and when somebody comes up with a good business case, then maybe things will happen. For now though, I'm very doubtful the GTAA will allocate an area on airport property for spotters. It just doesn't have the revenue potential as other projects they undertake.

The only way I could see the GTAA changing their stance on spotting is if you got private investment to provide the initial capital to construct a viewing area, a spot that could be leased from the GTAA in a remote area and taken care of by the private industry, almost like providing a concession stand at the airport, the GTAA already actively supports that kind of thing, and this would be a variation on that theme...Finding the private funds for that kind of undertaking would not be easy...and the returns would have to be worth while of course.

What about T1....i wonder how much money that have recieved from people like us just to sit up there and watch aircrat.....i think one day they made $50 easy.....just on us sitting up there for a few hours. I think there are die hards like ourselves, and yes as you put it RDPS, someone need to sign the paper....but there is that liability of something going wrong and the weight falls on their shoulders.....

I just hope some day we can make this dream a reality!
