Close Call At Linate Airport!

Wed Jan 22, 2003 9:29 pm

Yesterday at 08.05 cet. stood an Airbus on the rwy ready for T/O. The carrier was Flight AZ2021 with 168 pax on board on it's way to Rome.
The crew made there last checks while standing on the rwy and the checks took longer time then the ATC thought it would take.
On approach was also a private Cessna 525, but even due to this fact, the AZ flight got T/O clearence from the tower!
At 80 knots the tower told the AZ to abort the T/O and the pilot slammed the brakes and went off the rwy.
This was "just" a close call, but didn't they learn anything from SAS tragedy back in 2001, I can wonder.
When in doubt, flat out!

Why was the departing Airbus ordered to abort takeoff? I mean, the Cessna could, and should, have gone around if the Airbus was still on the runway.

Don't have an answer for you on that one, but a very good point.

If you have the cessna doing a go-around, and an airliner climbing away over the same piece of runway, there is a danger of the two colliding in mid-air. I guess it was easier to ask for the takeoff to be aborted rather than have two aircraft flying in close proximity.

Thanks for your input Cx...

I still wonder how ATC could give clr. for T/O when they knew the Cessna was on approach.
Have there been any update on there radarsystem since the SAS crashed?
When in doubt, flat out!
