Air Florida Airways

Thu Jan 23, 2003 4:24 am

I got this from JustPlanes.com...thought it may be of interest to some....

"Air Florida Airways is planning to start service in Jun03 with service to 5 destinations in the US including Chicago Midway. The airline would initially use a fleet of 3 MD80s along with a B757 and/or B767."

Should be interesting to see how long this one lasts.

Thier fleet makes no sense, but it is for real. They will hub in St. Louis Mid-America and expand to ten destinations by year's end. Them starting up is largely based on them reciving some money from Mid-America (or Illinois Gov't, I forget) officials. I believe they need $215M.

Well, the fleet does seem rather odd to me also. But anyways, moving on, MidAmerica needs SOME service. It has virtually nothing right now, a few millitary charters here and there. Pan Am to Gary, IND & Ordland-Sanford for awhile, but Pan Am pulled out of those routes. Air Florida claims that MidAmerica is desirable due to its geographical positioning. From my personal experience with MidAmerica, I really liked it, tip top facilities and terminal, but it just seems out of place to me.
717Fan, in the article it says they have a website, but i can't find it either.
MAH4546, you are correct, they are very dependent on money from St. Clair County (where BLV is), but it is 150 mil instead of 215  Smile

If in doubt, type in the airline name with .com at the end!!!

I hope to see this startup succeed, if only to see the classic Air Florida scheme in the air again  Smile From the website it looks like they're intending to use the same corporate logos...

From the STL paper...

http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/news/4BCAFE301355D85386256CB6001C63FF?OpenDocument&highlight=2%2Cair%2Cflorida&headline=Airline+asks+for+county+help+to+bring+it+to+MidAmerica

I'll chime with the rest and note that 3 MD80s, a 757, and a 767 seems problematic as a fleet, but hey, with so many birds populating the desert, maybe they're getting them at a great price. Still complicates the daily operation, unecessarily, IHMO.

Mid-America airport (BLV, joint-use with Scott AFB) is operationally a good spot, with none of the hassles of STL. It will be a drive though...

That reminds me... haven't I seen an artist rendering of an Air Florida 757 in the past here on A.net?

The whole thing sounds strange to me. A startup airline called 'Air Florida' is going to begin existence by operating flights between Southwestern Illinois and Chicago Midway?!?.... and on top of that, the article says:

"County officials said the holding company probably would buy an existing airline to help with its plans."

What airline would this new startup buy?? In this environment?

WTF??

If they are basing Air Florida Airways in St. Louis... why don't they call it Air Missouri... or hell just call it Ozark.

It would actually be based in Illinois, not Missouri, so "Air Missouri" wouldn't be appropriate either - but I like your Ozark idea!

Actually, BLV and STL are about equidistance from downtown. From my old office in Mid Town at Union Station, once I cleared the Popular Street bridge it would be about equal time to either airport. The big advantage for STL, the population is on the Missouri side and all the West County and St. Charles County people are scarred to cross the river. Okay, so I lived in Ballwin so I can't say much but still.
Perfect Timing though, I am job hunting right now, think they need any PR people?
